There is an English language section in the basement of the large bookshop at Xiden subway station - Line 1 i think it is

Also there are a couple of book shops on Wanfujing Street - also line 1 - you could go to with English sections: and the Foreign Language Book Shop (same street)

Books can cost from 60 RMB upwards - the last time i was there

It's not quite the same thing I know, but have you considered buying an ebook reader?

there are a lot of websites where you can download books for free, some where you pay but they're super cheap, then there are the torrent sites where everything is free.

Whatever you spent on the reader (they don't cost much) would be offset by all the cheap or free books available to you, and you could carry your entire library on the reader or your laptop which is great when you need to move.

how much is not too expensive?

pageone and fashion lounge has a large range of english books.

Stiggs:

I saw an advert for a kindle ereader for $69. There are probably cheaper options out there, and certainly more expensive options.
