Reading a lot of news about Mandela recently seeing as he's pretty sick at the moment. I'm just what kind of (if any) relationship he had with China? Did he ever come here?? What do the Chinese think of him?
I do not know if he ever set foot on Chinese soil, but he was the one to make ties between South Africa and the PRC at the cost of relations to ROC.
That must have meant something to China. But I doubt many people will cry when he leaves this world, typically people fighting for freedom are not seen as harmonious.
Hong Kong (yes I know HK but still) rock band Beyond (who's singer, Wong Ka Kui died exactly 20 years ago last Sunday) have a famous song called Guang Hui Sui Yue 光辉岁月 which is often translated as "Glory Years" in English. It's celebrating the life of Mandela and his achievements, so I guess the people of Hong Kong know who he is.
