That's a bit of a tricky question... generally no but sometimes yes, although not always legally.
Usually you'd be considered a non-native speaker which would rule you out for the visa. But - I don't know if this is still the case - if you have a degree from a native speaking country you can be eligible for a proper working visa.
The borders are closed now though, almost nobody can enter China but... if you happen to already be in the country in theory you'd still be able to land a job.
It would technically be illegal. You would not be able to get a residence permit and Z work visa.
Yes. In Nanjing they are gradually replacing the native English teachers. They're illegal, but considerably cheaper.

Post-Covid, probably, if you're ok with working in a 4th tier city. There were a couple of Kenyans working in the high school I taught at in China. One taught physics, the other math. Both had Ph.D's.
