We're different, we're foreign, we're not part of the Chinese family.
They stare, they don't care, they know we can't do anything about it.
We consider others because we care about the social climate we live in, and we understand that all bad things will ultimately affect us and our children at some point.
They don't consider our feelings because they base interactions on the 5 relationships described by Conficius:

•King to subject
•Father to son
•Husband to wife
•Older brother to younger brother
•Friend to friend

We don't fit in anywhere, so anything goes.

By the way, is this a feel-good summary of Confucianism?

You mean: 'on purpose'?

Chinese stare at everybody who's not Chinese, because their wall come down fairly recently (comparable to that long history), and they aren't accustomed yet at laowai faces or other colours of the skin spectrum, but yellow.

No smileys on my broadband. 'Kissy' fits here, of course.

Some people have the curious stare for anything foreign.
Some people have the judgment stare for anything foreign.
Some people have the malicious stare for anything foreign.

They all stare and make sure their friends do too. "Wow, quick look that way"
As if we never noticed.

Now I don't know if this is the same in other cities but here in Xuzhou staring is pretty regular. I just don't pay attention to any of it.

The city where I live was a hotspot for foreign traders during centuries and it was until the Communist takeover in 1948.

Since 1979 there are many factories in the area, the city has the largest number of wholesale markets in China, so there are many foreign business people who take regular trips in the area.

It was the first city in China to hire foreigners at key governmental positions.

Foshan is not bad at all, local people don't stare not even farmers.

You know when your computer crashes and you get that crazy blue screen?

That's what happens to Chinese people's brain when they see a foreigner.

royceH:

And again when that same foreigner says something that goes against what the local has been brainwashed to think.  Can't possibly take it in...just blank screen.
