In China people are required to be able to produce ID on request. Do you carry your passport on you when you go out?

Usually I do carry my passport when outside, but don't take it with me when I go out for a walk, go to the gym or some other place I don't carry my handbag to.
why should I?

Perhaps you look like the criminal, illegal immigrant druggie type to them...how should we know...if we can't tell, how could they possibly tell without checking the Interpol database.

and thats why they never ask me for ID...sure, it make sense...did u take ur pills today?
I carry mine and my marriage license, I have been stopped 4x on the highway at toll booth on the highway when traveling between schools. and once on the square near my place where i live. i keep it safe in travel wallet on my body hidden until i need it.
Nope. Too afraid of getting it lost. Getting beat by Mike Tyson with a baseball bat would be less painful than going to Shanghai to the embassy, then going back, then going to the PSB and all that jazz.
What I did is to photograph the front page of my passport and Residence Permit to my phone and my mini IPad (which I carry with me a lot). I have never had a cop ask me on the street to ask me for ID. So why risk losing it?
