Q: Do you feel safe in China?
Having lived and traveled in a few different places I definitely feel safer here than anywhere else in that I don't think anything of walking home on my own at night, and guys don't yell at you in the street as much, but do you think it's actually safer? How about for Chinese people?

do you mean safe from food poisoning, road fatalities, political prosecution ?

Originally I meant about being attacked or mugged, seeing as that's what I feel scared about in other countries, but here it's like a reversal, I'm not afraid of that, (although I think it happens a lot to Chinese people, we just don't hear about it so much) so I'm forced to consider what being safe actually means, and whether physical safety from assault is more important than other things, like traffic accidents, food poisoning, falling down man holes etc...

oh, the falling down man holes, that one is genuine. I was crossing a street one day and put my foot down right next to a missing drain metal thingy. 5cm to the left and I would have had my one leg in the sewer and probably some unpleasantness to the testicles.
Depends... in regards to traffic and theft... no, I do not.
For violent crimes... yes, I do somewhat. But seems like a lot of violent crimes on the rise in China recently. I think the fact knowing that none of them have guns and that I have a good fighting chance helps a lot too.
Guns are for corwards. Knives, swords and fists are for REAL men.

Am I likely to get jumped on the street? No...but then that never happened to me in the US either.
Is food safe? Are traffic codes respected? Is construction up to spec?
No, no and no.
I feel safe from physical aggression. But it was the same back home.
The air/water/ground pollution in China is very scary, however. The traffic is not very safe either.
Of course not, if you observe and pay attention its clear China isn't safe at all (pollution, scam, anti-foreigner sentiment, etc). Moreover, as foreigner here most likely some of our legal rights are non-existent. But since I came from Indonesia and its so much worse over there so yeah China is still slightly better. At least they got subway and better internet speed here lol.

I'm American and I would ask you the same question: Would you feel safe in America?

I've often heard Chinese say that they'd really like to live in the US because of different (I assume materialistic) reasons, but they are afraid of getting shot.
Adjusted for population, I am certain that China has so many preventable deaths each day, that it makes the trigger happy Americans killing each other all the time look like a tiny issue.
Well I'm less likely to be shot...but most white middle class people aren't shot in America either...
...But I'm far more likely to die of cancer here. So what do we mean by safety anyway?
depends on which city,i am living in dongguan,and i dont go out in the evening hahaha
but when i travel to some other cities,i always stay late on the street and i feel safe.
As DrMonkey said, walking down town it's not an issue, but what is in the air, water, food and I add personal relation ship that could turn your life a misery.
I love down walking and to my surprise, I have seen many more times, Chinese people fighting than anywhere else in the world. But the most shocking and often thing I've seen out off all fights where men hitting women, most of them young and very young ladies.
I have seen prime time what beating a women in China is and I have to say it, it made my blood go up the hills. In one case, I saw how tall young lads would beat up a poor lady pushing her from one to the other waiting for his turn. No one in the restaurant was able to stop them, and all ended up simply watching how that soul was humiliated. What mostly caught my attention was her attitude: she would not even defend herself at all, nor yell, nor say a word, only abandoned under the violence of the 2 animals, with the hope that they will get tired and stop. 'That's something that i will never forget it.
For men, it may be safe, but for women...that's not the same.

That's what I was thinking, that a lot of foreign women feel safer here, because we're outside of it all, but Chinese women must have a very different experience. I don't think men hitting women happens a lot more here than in the West, but it's just more open and people won't get involved.
I don't feel safe, I'm scare that something happens to me in the middle of the street and no one helps me, I,m scare that I get sick and I have to go to the chinese hospitals. In china the laws are not as stricts as in other western countries, so I'm not safe if I have to face the law.
Chinese women are not safe from their baijiu drinking, society repressed husbands. The dickheads skoff baijiu for two hours and brag about how great they are, how China is on the cusp of world domination (all to show face to their likewise dickhead mates) and then go home and beat their wives. This, according to my wife and her friends, is a very common occurrence. She has been called out to go to her friends houses to stop beatings a number of times.
Chinese men...emasculated. Baijiu...has a lot to answer for. Why don't the fkers just ban it!

Chinese men are the biggest cowards in the universe, they beat their wife but look at the ground when passing a strong looking foreigner in the street, well except when they are with their 20 buddies, in this case they catcall the foreigner before giggling, thinking that they are smart (they are not). And it's not an Asian thing, from my experience (lived in both) men in Japan or Korea don't act like cowards, they stand for themselves and except rare cases don't beat their wife.
