Q: Do you have library membership?

Do you have a library membership in your city? Are there any English books?

Libraries aren't profitable and they can lead to people asking uncomfortable questions about the financial and political elite. As a result, China has very few of them.

libraries are difficult to find, yet alone a good one on the mainland.  i suppose, they would just be used for free air conditioning and napping.  recently in HK, and a wonderful experience for those who miss a good library

I've got membership to not one but two libraries, but that's just how I roll. Full throttle, born to be mild. They've both got pretty decent English sections.

I don't have a library card, because the library close to my flat (Suzhou SIP) have few books I can read, just a few English literature classics.

Nanjing's public library is really well designed and accessible. They have a small selection of English books. If you can read in Chinese, you got a large & interesting selection. They don't have any comics :(

mArtiAn:

Let me guess; Jane Eyre, Treasure Island and a few Sherlock Holmes novels, right? I used to think China's libraries had only five English books that they circulated throughout the entire country. I was wrong of course, i've since discovered they have.....oh dozens.

Ha ha, yeah, *exactly* those ^^ A few science-fiction books would have been nice, at least some Poe's novels, or... Animal Farm :D

Our community have a small library for the inhabitants. No card needed, also nothing in English, but they have comfy chairs and aircon.

I've never actually seen a library in China. The bookstores seems to serve as libraries as there is always lots of people sitting on the floor reading.
