the value of the four points for being the first to answer is being abused by a blithering idiot who knows very little about... anything and talks circles around his own nonsense?
I'm finding it rather annoying that the ones who are posting the best answers (and I certainly don't mean myself) like Happy and John and many others deserve the 4 points, not for being first, but for being good answers with thought put into them.
Maybe it is time to rethink the 4 points for the first answer and figure out how to give the four points to the highest voted answer (based on merit).
End of rant.
PS.. I'm willing to bet he's the first one to answer this question.
Edit: AHAHA he didn't answer first, but did thumbs down the question LOL.
And Cat, before you get on my ass... I tried sending this through proper channels 2 weeks ago, but have not seen any response.
I agree. Lose the 4 points for the first answer. You get points when people vote positive on your comments, so the best answer will end up scoring more points for the user anyway. Posting a question can be 4 points, but answers should all be the same value (except for the CRIT! I like that.) and let the user base content vote to get more points.
It's a little silly that for a lot of questions the first post is "I don't know the answer, but....." It does seem like some people are just posting for the sake of posting...
On another note, there have been a lot of REALLY useful questions and answers on here. Most of them end up being "answer of the day" but not all. I think there should be a link at the top in the categories section where it just shows all of the AotD and/or Q&As that have high votes - kind of like a "best of..." Just an idea.

An answer has to be an answer. There is no right or wrong answers because they vary from person to person from there experiences and different knowledges. One thing I will say however is that you can't answer a question with a question. For example: "People"? That's not an answer its more like confusion. I can't tell if that is an answer or a question so it's more like confusion.
HugAPanda:
Yaya.. you are too simple and narrow minded to have any understanding of... anything. An answer can also be a question. My "People?" which has given you an aneurysm is related to a "Tag" question. A "tag" question declares a statement and may be followed by an interrogative. In conversations between intelligent people. the interrogative is not always necessary, and is still understood. There is your English lesson for the day. THERE will be no more lessons for you until YOUR usage of you're and your, and their, there and they're improve. :)
mattaya:
I did notice i was messing up on that they're, there and their and you're/ your. Thanks! I had since corrected it. And not to mention there are others that need correcting as well. But thanks I have noticed that. I did realize that Hugapanda thanks for noticing I just noticed that too a couple of days ago. Looks like my english is improving! Practice does make perfect and it has been awhile since I started to write a lot. I also write on another forum sherdog. I hope the spell check feature comes soon I really don't like reading all the misspellings. Even I misspell at times and need a little correcting.
Shining_brow:
While the word 'awhile' does exist, it does not get used very much (correctly). "I have not done this for a while" is correct, not "I have not done this for awhile".
Similarly, (unless modern dictionaries have given in to this common mistake, and judged it correct now), there is NO word 'alot' (adjectival phrase). There is the word 'allot' (verb), but its meaning is COMPLETELY different....
Just since we were on the subject :p
mattaya:
Usually you can ask a quesiton after you have answered the question being asked. Answering questions with questions is just all over the place. There is no resolution. Two confused people won't get any answers for either of the questions. If you said people make it definitive like an answer should be. If you add the symbol "?" it is confusing. That is the statement you make. You could have stated: People! And then proceeded to make another question. Or have a discussion about it. It's just confusing. I like the answer People without the question mark. That's all!
HugAPanda:
Didn't you pretend to go to university in NC? And Redding? And a simple question mark confuses you? Your head must be swirling right now.
I would think that a USAF cadet, as you claim yourself to be, would be able handle a simple question. I hope that one day you have an understanding of the English language beyond what they teach you in wu mao school and question marks stop being little boogey men in your little wu mao closet.
HugAPanda, this is a great suggestion, I do second the motion. And if I may, please allow me to expand it a bit.
I will give all answers to a valid question two points. Then, to the answer that gathers the most "thumb ups" will give 2 bonus points (or whatever).
And then also, if a stupid question is posted, and gets 3 "thumbs down", the CAT will remove it from the site by deleting it. It will stop a great deal of the annoying going on if enacted.
mattaya:
Only problem with this is there is thumbs down trolls. And some of the trolls already admitted they would give a thumbs down regardless of the question.
HugAPanda:
I agree Happy, with most of it. I wouldn't mind seeing the down votes disappear altogether, but if they must remain, then the question with a total of 3 in the red gets deleted. The only issue with that is the trolls will multiply and return and give out as many thumbs down as they possibly can. If that is permitted, then valid questions and answers are at risk of being removed.
I agree and great idea.
This was the real reason for my "why do people here answer questions when they don't have an answer" post, which I see has resurfaced again.
The swiftness, childishness, vagueness and some utterly juvenile responses from the aforementioned poster have been noted by yours truly on a daily basis for the past few weeks as well. Please Admincat, stop the insanity! I might add that his constant stream of pointless questions is getting to me too.
HugAPanda, I do agree with your comment to my answer, if trollers do get into it, some meaningful questions will run the risk of being deleted. Maybe the number of negatives should be greater than 3, maybe 5 or so, or the CAT should use good judgement prior to decide to delete a question (is it stupid or not?).
There are many of us who are getting bored and sick with juvenile or answers that do not answer the question asked at all, stupid meaningless questions every day, and trolling. I wonder why the main person doing most of it does not hear the message and curtails his act a bit?.
HugAPanda:
I think the ultimate decision is Cat's always, but he/she (I'm not sure) would have to spend a decent chunk of time trying to make that determination for the downers, which is why I think ditching the down votes will solve a lot of issues, including the contention that rears up every now and then. I was genuinely surprised and maybe even a little disappointed he didn't answer this question first (and has only added comments thus far). I was looking forward to the irony. Unfortunately, I don't think he comprehends any of this and will continue his antics. (I better stop pushing my luck or Cat is going to claw me.)
giadrosich:
Biting is okay, but being scratched can lead to "cat scratch fever." Or so Ted used to tell me...
So my "That's a great question" first post won't get me 4 points any more?? You bastards!!!!
Anyway... I also think that any form of voting is available for rigging by trolls, so isn't likely to do much. - not until it can be determined who is doing the voting (which is why, in a normal election, you need to present your ID, and you can only vote once!)
Keeping that in mind, what if there were other voting options? Maybe a dropbox for allocating a general reason - including an option to say "I downvote this because it's just stupid"! At least that way, Admin can see a majority of votes are being done for a certain reason (such as stupidity), and then delete the post when there's enough them (3? 5?) And, then deduct the points Contrasting with - up-votes which can have an similar reason "It's up-voted because it's not stupid, so don't delete this".
If Admin can see who's doing the voting and reasoning, the patterns should become obvious!!!
it would also make Admin's job a lot easier...simple search result for all posts with X number of "stupid downvotes"... check, delete if appropriate!
mattaya:
That's a wonderful idea. ... a drop box to say why you down vote or maybe why you upvoted. Some of the trolls will just downvote because they may not like the user that they don't even know which is ridiculous. There have been a lot of back and forth lately and as admin pointed out ignoring is the best way. I agree with the drop box menu to let others know why the downvote was casted. Good idea!
GuilinRaf:
Would this drop box include options like "do not like the poster", "trolling" or "no reason"?
Better idea: "Block posts from user" button.
HugAPanda:
LOL I suggested that a while ago on one of Cat's How can we improve posts... It got thumbs down :( I think it would be great! I could ignore the one instead of fantasizing about him going to the principal's office for a good paddling... or sitting in the corner with gum on his nose and the dunce hat on. (And trust me, there are much better things to umm... think about!)
Options for the drop box:
Positive (thumbs up)
1). Very informative answer! Great minds think alike.
2). While I don't agree with all points, it was well written.
3). Thanks! I needed a good laugh today!
4). It's the thought that counts, but you gave it a good try.
5). Wow! Sexy avatar! Let's get together later.
Negative (thumbs down)
1). This has nothing to do with the question asked!
2). Sorry. Your reasoning is convoluted and your writing childish.
3). Your information is outdated. Do some research and learn to edit.
4). I don't like you or the horse you rode in on.
5). I'm a troll and you suck!
