How is it for tree lined boulevards, parks, restaurants and places for a cold ale?
What kind of mix are the residents?
Is is a peaceful place?
If you have any first-hand knowledge of Karamay I'd be grateful if you would share it with me.

Karamay is a very clean and modern city - black oil hill and oil museum are good to see - as is Ghost Castle.
Enjoyed - meeting young and old.be careful of Moutai 57% alcohol, they can drink it like water.
I see. Thanks for that info. Was hoping you'd be able to tell me about a quiet place to have a beer and watch sport.
This is a great blog piece from a guy who lived there for ages. It sounds like a cool place, but be warned: Xinjiang is isolated and life there can be hugely isolating (although the higher Uyghur population should reduce this effect compared to Urumqi, where I was; Uyghurs are hugely welcoming to foreigners). I wouldn't expect too many beer-and-sport expat places if I were you.
