Friend of mine is thinkin about coming to China, but he's got a criminal record. Nothing bad (think he got arrested for getting into a brawl of some kind), but would his visa application automatically be turned down on account of having a criminal record?

On your visa application form, there is a question that asks you if you have a criminal record in China or elsewhere. If your answer is yes, then below there is another section to explain in detail why you answered yes. The more details, like dates, places, events, etc, the better for you. A brief answer will be more negative than the whole truth.
It will depend on the facts and mitigating circumstances if it will be granted or denied. One brawl, and years of no more problems may get you a visa, a repetition of same or similar offenses, some recent, will probably get you turn down.
Usually you can't get a passport with a criminal record. How would he apply for a visa without one?
I'm not sure if I understand the question or if I'm just not looking at it correctly. Why would you put any information of any kind in that area unless you have commited a federal or international crime.
Meaning, if it wouldn't be on a Federal or Euro background digital check, leave it empty.
