I was having a beer with a Chinese friend and as we left the bar/pub and walked outside my eyes started watering. I assumed my eyes were protecting themselves from the pollution(it was a brilliant 290 PM2.5 day) but he said my eyes water because I have a bad liver. Anyone heard this one? If not, do these old wives tales ever get old?

It's worse with contacts! Just explain to anyone who asks that your eyes water up because you can't get over how much you love China and you wish you were born Chinese.
They will also tell their women never to stand up within a month after giving birth or not washing their hair during periods, will let windows wide open to suck up all the pollution around, smoke like there's no tomorrow and still see no problem at all.
Look at most men looking like beans when they hit their thirties (even before) and tell me you really will take seriously any of their medical expertise.
juanisaac:
That is because they drink, smoke, and eat crap all day. I keep telling the men I know to cut down on that.
I should inform them that those behaiviors, over the long-term, will make them impotent. If you've got a bad liver I think it will make the whites of your eyes turn kind of yellowish. Blackouts are a major warning sign too, if you have those regularly i'd maybe consider cutting down.
Scandinavian:
at least most days the pollution is not bad enough to be considered a blackout.
Pishposh, bad liver is not watering eyes. If you have a bad liver you can tell by your left testicle hanging lower then the right, on days with winds from the north.
290 Air "quality" is great for many things, but not for making the eyes not water.
mArtiAn:
Pishposh indeed, what boo-hockey, tsk, but enough of this bally-hoo, is it really true about your liver and your left testicle and all that.....or am I standing here with my pants round my ankles for nothing?
Scandinavian:
Pants around the ankles is never in vain. This is what freedom is all about. ... and vodka drinking while doing it.
Scandinavian:
@Andy. I suggest you start saving up for an iPad so you can trade it with some kid for a fresh liver. Alternatively see if someone of the female gender can help you reduce the weight of the low hanging testicle.
Mr_spoon:
I wonder how many guys checked their privates "just in case"
Hahaha....
Chinese will come up with any stupid excuse to try and save face for their country....
It's not smog... it just a really foggy day!
It's not smog... it's an Ameican/Japanese super cloud meant to dishonor Chinese people!
It's not smog... now die you foreign pig!
since your user name is wagon , does that mean you fell off it don't worry about your liver the more grog you drink will help preserve it
Just give your friend a taste of his own logic. Tell him drinking makes you smarter. We know drinking will kill brain cells, but which ones does it kill first? The weak ones so you will get smarter every time you drink!
I have the problem without drinking. It can be from the cold, the wind, dust.... Any number of things. Drinking will only make your eyes water if you drink obsessively and start crying like a baby as a result.
Otherwise I won't worry. And yes people are superstitious. I am about many things, but have never heard that watery eyes are connected to a bad liver.
Any occasion the Chinese attack a foreigner's liver and that's any foreigner. Me they said I have a fatty liver. I say enough is enough!!! Next time any Chinese says another derogatory thing against any foreigner's liver. I'll rip my own liver out (that is if I can find it) and bludgeon it over each and every Chines that I see - that is until I pass out!!!
Nessquick:
I have been told have problems with livers, even before and during examination for health check for visa processing... and yeah, I wait for doctor till everyone from hospital left, tha she closed the door and told me, Tha t my livers are bad and can not let me pass the check. I said, but hell, after 3days my visa end and aftertomorrow need fly to HK for the Z-visa. she said no banfa. so i turned and went out. just than I realized, she was waiting for some "fee" , but screw it, i flew to HK for another L visa, and done the check 2 weeks later again :)
probably, hongbao will be cheaper than 3 days in HK for nothing, but hey, I do not pay black money...
Well, how much really do you drink and what time do you start drinking and how often do you drink and you can function without drinking? Those are the real questions.
We've just had two weeks of AQI levels about 200. I noticed the dogs eyes watering. Now AQI is below 50, and the dogs eyes are normal.
I am pretty sure he has not been in my vodka stash, and he gets the same kibble every day, sleeps in the same spot etc. There are changes in humidity and temperature too, but let's agree pollution in the air annoys the eyes.
wagon:
Yeah, pollution and a cold, brisk wind does it to me. No such problems sitting in a sauna with that bottle of vodka the dog didn't get into. At least that's what my Finnish pops says.
