Q: Ever get annoyed that common sense is told as advice?

Anyone ever get annoyed by your Chinese acquaintance tells you something that is common sense as if they are giving you advice?

Example

"What did you do last night?"

"Oh I went to have a beer with a friend."

"Oh, you know, beer is not good for health"

"Thanks d*ck!"

Or,

"What are you going to do at the race track?"

"I am going to bet on the horses."

"Oh it is not good to gamble."

"Yeah, GFY!"

Hahaha, yeah I get that too but the weirdest thing about it is that I now find myself giving similar aweful advice. "Oh you're sick? Drink lot's of hot water", "You're tired? Go to bed early to get some proper rest."

I get that alot. I find it a bit frustrating when I'm sort of lectured by elder people/work superiors about matters which they think I don't know but which are so blindingly obvious.

Yeah, and the thing that really gets me is how if there's a group of them they all sit around nodding and going "Mmm yes that's good advice".  Dat really P*SSES ME URF!  And then, then!!!  They all look at you expectantly because the ONLY acceptable response is clearly to accord deep religious respect to this kind word-smith who has reached down from the heavens to intervene in your pathetic attempts to live appropriately.  Idiots!

Err sorry about that...

Haha, I remember a conversation with a QQ friend.  It was at the end of a BCD one winter evening.  She mentioned it was cold outside and I agreed.  Then she gave me the advice to wear more clothes.  My reply was, "Of course, I will wear more clothes.  I'm not stupid!"   Her "advice" was not to be taken literally.  It is just a Chinese gesture like, "take care of yourself".  I knew this, but I had a very frustrating day and her comment was the last straw. I never heard from her again.

Sometimes you just have to put down the koolaid, get off the ipad, stop smoking the cigars and just listen. It's advice yes and it's good advice. Do you even know how many people are ruined because of their gambling and alcohol addictions? Trust me you don't want to know.

If someone told you it's not good to drink and drive and you still do it;  do you think that's smart of you to not have listened to your friend. I bet you won't think that if you get pulled over by the cops or have an accident and it's your fault. Ever spend time in the slammer? yeah, neither have I and I'd like to keep it that way! no

You don't have any common sense or you wouldn't be here, but don't take my advice, we want to see you in the slammer.

Don't be a dick about this kind of 'advice'. It's actually just polite conversation. 'Drive safe' isn't asking you to retort "NO STUPID.. I DIDnt KNow that!".

Likewise, "oh beer is not good for your health" is just a way of Chinese convo.

Ever occur that YOU were the one being a stupid dick after all?

frankbenedix:

Funny thing you mention, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people say, "drive safe!"  Why do people say that?

I think if the person you are saying goodbye to while he/she is getting into a car, happens to be an actor, then "break a leg" is just as appropriate.

It sounds like the same polite conversation I get in Australia. No big deal.

Chinese Writing Network (www.T262.comOriginalfinishing> Junior EnglishComposition Early to Bed, Early to Rise
There is an English saying. It says, "Early to Bed, Early to Rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and Wise . "Have you ever heard it before? It means that we should go to bed early and get up early. If we do, we shall be healthy. People must have enough time to sleep. We should sleep for 8 hours every day. So we must do our homework quickly and go to bed before 10 pm Proverbs can always give us some enlightenment. To know some proverbs is good for us.

frankbenedix:

we do have these sayings, but usually people do not say these things, and the ones that do we say, "hey you know Johny over in accounting?  Yeah the one who always says the proverbs?  Yeah, I am pretty sure he is a little slow."

Like others have said, it's just a Chinese being polite.  It's their way of showing concern. If they don't care at all, they won't say anything. Besides, we say stupid stuff too. Like if you're talking to a friend, and you leave first, you say something like "Don't stay up too late." Or if you're at work, a customer might say "Don't work too hard" or "You should smile more." Yes, these things can get a little annoying, but it's nothing to get angry over.

frankbenedix:

Well, those things annoy the crap out of me too.  Nothing to get angry over, I agree, but it is a reason to vent.  And people who do this often will probably be called less than people who do not.

If you tell me to smile more then perhaps you should evaluate your prescience near me before you find yourself trying to pick up your teeth from the floor - it's not easy to do with broken fingers you know !

@ Scandinavian

I know what you mean. The morning my father died in 1990, I stopped at a 7-11 for some coffee having been up all night as he slipped away.

When I went to the cashier, she tells me "Why the sad face? Whatever it is, it is not that bad!" To this day, I am amazed that I  did not splash the hot coffee in her face. I just walked out and left.

I find it far worse when they tell something that is complete bullocks but they think it is common sense and they think they are doing a favor by giving it as advice despite it not being wanted even if it had been sound advice.

great point.  That happens too much.

I do not mind the advice as much as I hate them trying to push it on you, that is my pet peeve. Wash the floor with cold water and drink hot water to be healthy, oh you China, just one of your many contradictions
