Q: Has anybody ever travelled with a cancelled passport?

I mean; you have renewed your passport, but your valid resident permit is still inside your old passport.

BHGAL:

yes, I did.....  they clip the pages of the old passport but left the visa page unclipped...it worked,  but like I said, it is somewhat worrisome and a pain in the ass having 2 passports........ I'm sure you understand why.... takes some convincing at the border or bank or wherever else you have to explain.

In the old days in the PRC, meaning pre-2008, one could renew a passport (meaning obtain a new passport) and still carry the still-valid resident permit in the old passport.  It was even possible to exit and sometimes, I say, sometimes re-entry the country like that.  Things have changed, however; the procedure now is new passport, new visa, or old visa just re-applied for and put into new passport.  Now they apply the six-months rule which means the passport must be valid for six months past the expiration date of the residence permit or they are reluctant at best to do it.  A friend of mine received a new passport recently because he had reached the maximum add-on to the number of pages that could be added and of course the residence permit was still valid. Nonetheless the PSB insisted, through his school, that he obtain a new visa in the new passport.  This is really, really risky around here these days and perhaps the most conservative approach must be the best one, just IMHO.

The visa folks seem to be getting stricter and stricter with the rules for sure.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
