Yeah I know they had a lot of bloody internal civil and tribal wars/revolutions, but have they ever officially been a party to war and prevail? I don't think the Korean War counts because they were only mercenaries and technically that war never ended yet. They don't admit to their brief border clash with Vietnam. The reason I ask, is because I think that without any actual experience fighting a modern war, they would not stand a chance against Japan or any NATO country.
I have a hard time counting Korea and for that matter Vietnam as 'war victories'. In these cases there were complex political goals, proxies, international concerns and I have a VERY HARD TIME suggesting China 'defeated Japan' but since I don't want a massive amount of 'national pride' heaped on me I won't really go further.
But China has had some epic civil wars, uprisings etc.
Someone here intended to slight the USA but a few things worth mentioning - there are coalitions in the ME.
But one of the most stunning things I ever saw were 'body count' ratios in Afghanistan. It's absolutely stunning. As high as 35-1 in favour of western forces. Apparently Afghans/Taliban SUCK at fighting.
China could quite possibly fight Afghanistan and win!
Well, they did fight us (the USA) to a standstill in Korea back in the 1950's. Does that count?
badtroll:
It wasnt their war, it was the Koreans war. I think he meant an actual war where they are the main combatant. And if it wasnt for China, nothing would be left of the North Korean troops as the US got greedy and pushed them into to China bringing hell upon themselves.
crimochina:
very clever trol. but the truth is korean troops were never pushed into chinese territory . americas goal was to unite korea under soth koreas banner. but that is not their originally stated goal . the fight was still in north korea, but america was succeeding. china then unofficially entered the war along with some russian pilots . the reason for this is really unknown to me. either russia pressed china in to intervening , china did not want an america friendly nation right on it's doorstep, or china really thought the us would press forward into china.
but i will check with my students to see if that is what china teaches them. hehe it is funny usa pushed the koreans into china, what rubbish. and if you ask me that was a win for china.
badtroll:
Yes, there were reports of US troops crossing over to China but that could have been just China making up bullcrap to enter. Russia was already in Korea at the time after the end of WW2 so if they wanted to fight or bring bio-weapons in, they had all of North Korea to do it with and train, but they gave it up and left after the NK government was installed.
As calling that a win, ya they surprised the US Army in the middle of winter and pushed them back but their casualty count ranged from 100,000 to 250,000 depending what sources you go with. They chose to even stay and try to hold up the lines after the US had gotten reinforced, what a stupid mistake, but I guess its just Soldiers, right? (or Chinese logic)
They didn't even "win" Korea in any sense anyway. That war accomplished its purpose of booting the commies out of South Korea. What SHOULD have happened was the west should have gone all in and march straight to Beijing.
Anyway, they haven't won a thing. And they would be destroyed in a real war now.
GuilinRaf:
That is what MacArthur wanted to do, so Truman sacked him....
crimochina:
i agree with truman. macarthur was a moron invading china would have lead to ww3 (this was before people became afraid to use nukes). nevermind, i would actually say the states lost that one. (korea) after entering into north korea, they changed the stated goal (i need to re-watch my korean war documentary to verify)
nevermind:
I think the full force of the west and Chiang Kai Shek would have destroyed Mao's army. Its too bad they didn't.
I dont' think you can say the US lost. Mac Went into NK without the proper backing, he was pushed back south a bit, then had the Chinese retreating up until where the border stalemated and is now. That's my view on it.
they defeated japan in ww2. they defeated the usa as they attempted to invade china through korea. they defeated england to reclaim hong kong. they actually did in away defeat india in that small skirmish in the west.
badtroll:
They defeated USA in what way bro? Tell me, cuz from what the history books say, the US pushed them back across that 38 line.
crimochina:
this post was a joke. the reality is when the us entered korea it was at first to preserve and defend south korea. (i watched the documentary years ago my facts might be off) but after crossing into north korea with relative ease. their goal changed to incorporate north into south korea. did they achieve that goal? then it is what you call a failure. (if my facts are off please someone correct me)
King_Of_Hearts:
Sorry Crimo, China did not defeat Japan. America and Dr. Oppenheimer defeated Japan in WW2. And Korea was not China's war to fight, and that war was never won or lost. Legally the armistice signed provided for a "temporary truce" so technically, the "state of war" was never terminated.
crimochina:
korea was not americas war to fight either. also this post was a joke post. either way this talk about korea and ww2 has stirred up my history jones so i'm going to watch the documentary i have on it
ChinaScamPatrol:
Just curious Crimo... why did yu say this was a joke post? I see it is as a straight question considering what could develop with Japan over those stupid islands.
OP, Why ask? Seems like a question asked for the purpose of causing friction.
giadrosich:
That's why it was asked, lol. Look at who has joined since October and look at the type of questions they post. Pure proscriptiveism.
bill8899:
Haha that's what I thought. Damn they should give it a rest.

China Defeated India in 1961 War..
King_Of_Hearts:
1961 War? What was this about and how come we never heard of such a "war". Was this really a war or some border skirmish? How long did it last? Or are you referring to the Great War with Khazakstan that claimed the life of General Gashan - Borat's real father?
In the great border kerfuffle of 1989, both sides claimed victory. The Chinese for proving their point, if you will; the Vietnamese for successfully not being occupied.
here you will get all the details.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Indian_War India consider it as a full scale war..I do not know international view or Chinese view on this..
China could have 50 aircraft carriers 100 subs and a 3 million man army. They still would not win a war without a foreign ally experienced in warfare like Russia, the U.S., India, etc. Their military is fragmented and too compartmentalized with integration on paper only. If they had to fight Japan, it would be the world's biggest cluster-fu*k within two weeks. I'll put my money on the Japs as much as I still don't forgive them for Pearl Harbor.
Not according to the history books I read in Denmark
