Q: Have you converted to metric since living in China? (Users of English system)

I've been here for about half a year now and am slowly starting to subconsciously think of things in terms of the metric system. While its still pretty confusing, the English system is looking more and more ridiculous to me. I wonder if any others raised with the English system feel the same way after living here for so long?

For everyday things, yeah....kilograms and meters have replaced pounds and miles/yards/feet/inches for me.  But as an engineer, I still hold onto other English measurements....I still need to convert the metric measurements of pressure, torque, and viscosity into psi, ft-lb, and cPs, respectively for it to register properly angry.

I'm not that old so I never really used the imperial system much  (by the way that's what it's called, not English system), aside from miles of course.  I still can't use kilometers, I have no concept of how far it is.  With height I guess I've changed. Used to say feet and inches for that, but of course they all use meters and cm over here.  When it comes to weight, I always used kg rather than pounds, but I'm used to using both from weightlifting.   When in Rome...

Depends where I am.

In the states, I use English system, here I use metric.

I even "translate" if for my friends.

goomba:

I often ride my bicycle. I will tell my American friends I rode 40 kilometers and they will ask me "how far is that?"  My initial response is always "40 kilometers"

Sad that users of the "English" system does not know it is called "Imperial Units".

NiceBrice:

I didn't know the exact name for our (inferior) system, so I looked it up online.

I initially googled "english system vs metric system":

5.68 million hits.

After seeing these comments, I googled "imperial system vs metric system":

3.03 million hits.

Jus sayin'

Scandinavian:

Yeah, the problem with the global village is all the global village idiots. There is power in the masses, but also stupidity.

Any thumbs down coming from Imperial unit users, I will only count as 0,62 each, as they have been converted from Imperial to Metric

I grew up in Canada, using the Imperial system......think it was late 70's when Canada went to the metric system ...........I can use both, but definitely believe the Metric system is a far simpler and smarter system..............  Americans are just too stubborn to change......kind of like Chinese, thinking they know better.

I grew up in Canada and it was early 80s that Canada went metric. I still prefer imperial, especially with temperature.
