Q: Have you noticed that the Chinese look fatter this year?

Or is it just me? Instead of the endless sea of thin legs, I'm seeing a large percentage of chunkier women. Some of the women I knew, I barely recognize now. My GFs a** got bigger and she has such a tummy that I asked if she was pregnant.

Obesity is on the rise. When I was first in China years ago I noticed the strange lack of fat people, now I think there are some fat people around. It's still far from how it is near the gambling machines in Vegas but still a litterally growing trend. You can also see the trend on other data like the fact that China has a 3rd of the people in the world with diabetes but only a 5th of the worlds population. Education on exercise and diet doesn't happen in schools, sure you can get some random tips from TV, but they are probably tailored to not raise too much concern in the population.

TedDBayer:

I'm surprised, maybe KFC is responsible but Chinese have a tradition of eating rice and noodles, a carb diet. Doesn't the body convert this to sugar?

Scandinavian:

It's too easy to blame American fast food chains. People are inactive, there is much superstition against doing anything that can elevate your heart rate. Considering I am sitting in a really large community, many people of all ages living here, I almost never see anyone out for a run, and those who are, are moving at snail pace. I spend on average 1½ hours per day playing with my dog outside, rain or shine, the only place in the community where there is any sign of life is where cars go in and out.

Strokes, heart attacks, diabetes is in the future for those Chinese lucky enough to not die of lung cancer, polluted water, fake food or get hit by a car.

@Ted. Did you not know that according to TCM experts, dragging your feet is a leading cause of impotence. (this is a purely made up fact)

And Chinese food is fatting, I watched them put about a cup of lard in the pan when they made my fried noodles, so much stuff is greasy.

Compared to 80's, they probably got fatter in average, probably for the best. Compared to last year, I will lol on that. For those once thin women... Change in lifestyle after getting married ? Can't say I've seen much people doing sport, apart from some students. That say, I managed to hook my wife on regular jogging and we happily ride our bikes for hours, so there's hope.

there is a clash between "lifestyles improved" and "too fat to exercise"

Quality of life is an illusion. If you have grandparents who have been beaten, starved and robbed of everything they had, perhaps they have become blind to reality and are mistreating their grandchildren setting no limit to what they do or eat.

I have been here 5 years and definitely have seen in increase in bigger bodies [I am polite now]. However, I see it more in the younger people.  I believe that it is not only from fast food consumption, but just more and better food available in China.

People are richer here.  Those that are richer eat more at dinner banquets which are a way of life here.

Those that aren't richer still have a McDonalds every so many miles, or a KFC.  Pizza Hut is not too expensive either.

Really, McDonalds and KFC both have a lot to answer for.  They were banned from France for years due to the obesity worries.

The Americans finally banned super-size.

Sadly, money talks, and when McDonalds say they can put 100 million chinese in work, they will get their way.

DrMonkey:

Hu ? McDonald and KFC are not banned in France :p You will find plenty of McDonald and a few KFC. French go there, a large proportion teenagers and students.

Go to Hunan province. Get on the bus. 3/4 of the women are overweight, some are obese, and some are morbidly obese.   I saw that last year, and this year as well.

Something's up in Hunan. I ran into maybe 4 or 5 fatties in other provinces, but in Hunan, fatties were the norm. Might be the sugar-sticks you can buy on the street?

Even in the countryside, there were a lot of fatties.

I agree, first came here 11 years ago and fat birds were very thin on the ground. Now there are blubbernauts appearing with increasing regularity. About the same regularity as new branches of KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut are opening up funnily enough.

Haha. I saw this question yesterday and was like yeah yeah they are getting fat. Then today after work I took the bus home and saw a bunch of chubby like awkward kids and chuckling a bit. Like 8 or 9 of them. In their XL uniforms haha. Really kinda funny. So very funny.

The question is moot. Because its a compliment.

This is among the nicest compliments you can give to a Chinese person (that isn't an unmarried woman), unless you're a doctor warning about heart disease.

Scandinavian:

....or a doctor warning about diabetes, or a therapist warning about what an unattractive slob you've become and this is why not even your paid mistress will touch your tackle, or someone who knows something about traffic safety who warns that as a fat bastard you are likely to take out quite a few other people when you crash you piece of sh!t car and flies through the windscreen as your not smart enough to wear a seatbelt.

Mateusz:

That'd lead to some cross-cultural miscommunication.

American: "Ay, yo. Listen. Yo' mamma's so fat, I took a picture of her during Chinese New Year, and it took until Mid Autumn Festival to print."

Chinese: "Why, thank you!"

American: "Chek this. Yo mamma so fat that I ran out of gas tryin' to drive around her."

Chinese: "Wow. Americans are so polite!"

I love how people try to blame American companies, but ignore the street garbage they eat. Chinese now eat more on the go, and they eat oily fatty fried soaked in dirty water on a stick garbage. Oh but it is not contributing to fat Chinese people, only American restaurants (even those who are too poor to eat at Mcdonalds).
