May be leaving China for 2 months this summer and would like to sublet my apartment during that time. Is that even allowed or possible? Is there anything I should know before I put out ad? Anyone have any experience with subletting in China?
As far as I know it is generally not allowed. You either need to keep the landlord in the dark or ask for permission.
It is probably common place, we put an apartment up for rent and within a couple of days I found that a guy was looking for roommates, he had posted an add, ripped my pictures, copied my text but jacked up the rent
I've a friend who's it twice in Beijing, though yes it's technically not allowed. People will post ads on Chinese and expat sights offering this kind of thing, and as far as I know loads of people do it due to the sheer transient nature of China's big cities.
Aren't foreigners supposed to show a copy of the landlord's ID, proof of ownership and copy f contract between them and the landlord upon registration at the police?
Apparently, Chinese are qlso supposed to do it, but just don't

most migrant workers are not officially where they actually are, so they don't have to bother about such paperwork.
I only have experience subletting in the UK and let me tell you it was a nightmare! It's not legal so the subletters can just screw you over and you have no legal rights whatsoever. If you can find someone you know and trust to take over for a few months then that's all well and good, but don't rely on strangers to uphold their side of the bargain. If you do end up finding a stranger through an ad however, make sure they pay all the rent up front BEFORE you hand over the keys. It's also a good idea to get a deposit off them incase you come back to find a furniture-free flat.
