Q: Is having a ridiculously full head of hair a prerequisite for being a hair stylist in China?

Forgetting about their western-perceived effeminate-ness for a moment, I'd like to know if there are certain "hair-based" job prerequisites for male hairstylists in China (after all, there are "appearance" requirements for lots of other jobs here already). Every time I go, these guys are sporting straight-out-of-anime hairstyles. Ridiculous as they may be, they all seem to have really full heads of hair, which is quite different from the thinning/balding guys I tower over on the bus each day.

Do the bosses hire with this in mind? Are the guys required to sport such outlandish hairdos? I feel like there is an entire subculture to hair salons here that I don't quite understand.

And why the hell are these places open until the early morning hours?

They experiment on eachother...hence the mops, the orange dyes (gingers all around) and the "I just got smacked upside the head" doos. Open until the wee small ones because a) some of them offer more 'services' than just bad haircuts b) a lot of people cannot get off of work until their boss leaves for the KTV c) after playing WOW for eight hours straight, you may feel compelled to get your rug cut a la anime.

Who cares how long they are open! It's their business....once you have your business you can do whatever you want with it. And the barber shop that I go to the guy in charge is bald while the other stylists have hair. Don't be too quick to judge!

There is actually a very popular bald hair stylist in the town I'm in.  I hear he's from H.K and all the girls seem to dig him too..

A:Your potential employer is right! Purpose of the Medical exam before granting Z visa is to make sure, you won't be entering China in any abnormal and harmful to others condition.Few days after your arrival to China, you'll be required to complete another ME ... If ME in China will be OK, you'll get a Residence permit stamp into your book some 10-days afterwards. Imagine, you're an employer, who can sponsor my entry and work in China, but after my arrival to China would be found I carry some sickness, which would prevent Chinese .gov to issue a Residence permit. Rule is: Z visa should be converted into Residence permit in 30-days after entry to China.    So, my advice is:"Complete ME in your home country and forward medical results to your employer".Z visa grant will follow shortly afterwards. Employer is not wrong at their demand for the pre-arrival ME from your home country hospital.   -- icnif77
