Q: Health Club Etiquette?

I just about lost it today.

I am staying in a 5-star hotel now, and decided to go for a swim in the health club in the hotel.

They refuse to let me swim in the pool unless I buy and wear their cheap 30 yaun shorts and also wear a swimming cap.

WTF?  It's ok to smoke throughout the club, spit in the locker room and piss in the shower, but I can't swim in the pool wearing my own shorts?

I stormed out swearing, and will be taking to the GM tomorrow.

I swear this country is ass backwards sometimes.

Bad China day or legitimate beef?

Any health club stories?

I have never had the problem with the shorts or swimming trunks, but I have always been required to wear a swimming cap and many times, swimming goggles as well.

First time in over a year here I have attempted to swim. The swimming cap I can understand a little....but making me wear their shorts just made me lose it.

Trust me, if you saw an analysis of what is in the pool water, you would be thankful.  I had a friend who did analysis for many pools in China and the results were enough to make me forbid my wife & kids from ever entering a public pool.

Dude, where are you? I also am part of a 5 star club but I don't have to wear that crap, no smoking is permitted and they literally have spit attendants to ensure the Chinese aren't destroying the floors. I go to the Renissance, where are you staying?

thedude:

Unfortunatly I am in a Chinese hotel and not a western brand hotel. It is just outside of Shenzhen in a factory town. This is part of the problem, It's a beautiful new hotel but I don't think they get alot of foreigners here, so western stardards are minimal.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
