Q: helping a student prepare for the Ielts speaking.

anyone really knows what the ielts oral exam is about? my students keep telling me that their chinese teachers tell them to speak fast, without even the slightest pause. even, after the question is asked , they are told just start speaking right after the question is asked, not ever taking a 2 second pause to think. any ielts examiner or anyone has taken the exam? are they looking for a real conversation on the topic? or something different? are these teachers just giving bad advice , trying to have the students "fool" the examiner.

The speaking test is split into three parts and is usually about 11-14 minutes.  All the information can be found online on the main site http://www.ielts.org. The main site also shares free information and tools for teachers and students for teaching and studying the IELTS.  You just need to put in the time to do some research.  There are also a lot of  IELTS preparation materials online.  I recommend checking out btjunkie or torrentz.  Good Luck

hello there,
hey, I took the exam and the "speak the fastest you possibly can" is not a good advice. they are wrong if they think the speed will hide bad pronunciation, grammatical errors or lack of substance. the conversation is going to be recorded. the key is: they have to expand in their answers as much as they possibly can; of course the more fluent the better, but you have to make yourself intelligible...as most things, it is a matter of balance Wink

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
