Q: Hiring a driver - cost?

Forgive me if this question has been answered previously, but does anyone have experience hiring a driver for business purposes?  My colleague and I were quoted 10000-14000 yuan/month, which seems insanely high?  Not to mention completely unjustifiable to our US employer who is probably loving our 500 yuan/month subway/taxi expenses.

Is the driver also providing the car and expenses ?  I do have a Chinese friend who owns a car and does this as a sideline, and he charges 700 yuans for an 8 hour day.  But he provides car and car related expenses like gasoline.

Quantasaurus:

We have been asking around and found a few drivers with their own cars.  The range of asking prices is nuts...  6800Y/mo - 16000Y/mo.  Your friend at 700Y/day is at the top of the range, too.  Is that a fairly reasonable price?  If so, looks like its subway/taxi for me!

That is his price on a per day basis, I am sure that on a monthly basis it will be a lot less. Once you become a bit familiar with the city you are on, public buses is your best bet. At 1 and 2 yuan a ride, you can not beat that.

It will depend on where you live in China, where i live local wage would be no more than 2000 quai a month.  Here you could easily find someone as long as they have a license and you have a car should not be a problem to find a driver. My Chinese ex dad has a few drivers and its actually a great gig as a job as you mostly sit around on call ready to drive or pick someone up, you get to drive a very nice car and the drivers normally eats in nice places with the people hiring them.

Did you use a agency?  Try asking some Chinese friends to find someone.

Quantasaurus:

I have asked some friends as well as in the lobby of our residence...  the range of prices is pretty extreme, from 6800Y/mo - 16000Y/mo!  So still looking.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
