Q: Hong Kong to Macau without transiting the PRC.

I heard, I believe, that there is a ferry.  Has anyone taken it?  How long does it take?  Where to catch it in Hong Kong and where does it land in Macau?  Can one fly? It must be a short flight on a plane even if there is such a service.

You can catch the high speed ferry from HK (the ferry terminal) to Macau ferry terminal. Also you can get a helicopter to Macau from HK airport.

The helicopter ride is about 15 mins. It's pricey.

Ferry is 60-70 minutes depending on departure port. Turbojet and Cotai Jet have frequent departures in both directions. From 7 until midnight there is very frequent ferries, outside this, it is worth looking in the schedule. on normal days there is no need to book in advance.

There are two ferry terminals in Macau. Due to the geography of Macau there is no big difference between the two. The Macau Maritime Ferry terminal is walking distance to the old part of Macau, as far as I remember the free casino shuttle busses stop here. They are an excellent way of getting around Macau, exploit them even if you are not going to gamble.

If sailing during daytime you can get a good view of the more scenic parts of Hong Kong, especially if you are lucky enough to have a seat with front window. Some ferries only have transparent windows on first class. the only other benefit of first class is a piece of fruit or cake and c cup of tea, generally not worth the extra price.
