I know that there's a smart thing called Yikantong, but apparently it's nonexistent in Guilin. Yet, the locals seem to be proficient in using some type of card on Guilin's buses to get around.
Any advice on getting one?

Ask teller in the Bank. Bankers in China (at least one in every Bank) understand English.
They are called 公交IC卡 and there are several locations you can buy one. I bought mine from the China Mobile hall located at 48 Zhongshan Zhong Lu in the city centre.
It has a massive blue sign with a scrolling red electronic sign underneath and is located about 5 mins walk north of the main intersection of Zhongshan Zhong Lu and Jiefang East Lu on the right hand side of the road.
When you go inside, there is a counter at the back of the hall towards the left hand side. It costs 25rmb for the card and then you add credit on top of that.
