Ah another question on the dreaded visa! I've been in China nearly 3 years and changed jobs 4 times (all in Jiangsu) and so far I haven't had to leave China. Am I just lucky? I keep hearing stories about Hong Kong runs even for those who had a Z visa. How come?

Easy, the Chinese do have a procedure for those foreigners who change jobs and go to their local PSB to request a new work permit (not a "Z" visa) and new residence permit within 10 days of doing so, and with all required documentation, like release letter from former employer, work contract from new employer plus his authorization to hire foreigners, etc. If done that way, then you have no need to go to HKG or back home to get a new work visa.
Unfortunately, many foreigners in China have no knowledge of what a work visa, or a work permit, really are.
If you "had" a Z visa and working permit in the past you will still need to go back home to start the application for a new Z visa. It is even virtually impossible to process working visas in Hong Kong at the moment. Sometimes exceptions are made if you are a doctor or a scientist etc.
If you have a working permit now then it is quite a simple process to transfer this while staying in China. The problem most people face though, is employers unwilling to cooperate and supply all the correct documentation.
