Q: how is Dongguan for expats?

I am considering an employment opportunity in Dongguan city and have following questions-

1. How is the city for living in terms of saftey?

2. How is the city for an Indian vegetarian?

3. What is the cost of living for two to cover accommodation, hi-speed wi fi, electricity, gas, maid, local travel, outing - a higher middle class lifestyle?

Dongguan is great for an expat, we have many foreign owned bars and restaurants and there is plenty of parks.

1. Many Chinese complain about the safety here but in the last 4 years I have been here I have felt VERY safe, there are hardly any crimes committed against foreigners. Just be careful if you take the bus as there are many pickpockets.

2. There are vegetarian options here and we have a couple of Indian restaurants (owned and run by Indians) one is in Dongcheng (the main districts) the others are outside the city in a couple of the larger towns.

3. You have many choices for living and depending on if you want to live in Dongcheng or Nancheng for downtown. Dongcheng is where 80% of the expats live and becuase of this house pricing there is more expensive than Nancheng. To take a taxi from Nancheng to Dongcheng takes about 20 minutes and costs around 15-20rmb. Personally I have always lived in Nancheng as the amenities are still as good as Dongcheng. Expect to pay about 3,500-4,000 in Dongcheng and 2,000 - 3,000 in Nancheng. Internet costs around 1,000 for the year. A maid can cost as little as 5rmb per hour. Local travel is pretty cheap if you take the buses. A meal for two in One For The Road (the popular expat bar/restaurant) is about 150-200, depending on how many drinks you have.
