Overstaying a visa in China is not something Chinese officials will take lightly. Why?. Because in doing so, you are showing them that you have no respect for their laws and regulations, even if it was not your intent to do so.
The fine will be 500 Rmb per day, up to a maximum of 10,000 Rmb. But that is not all. Depending on the severity of your offense (how many days, weeks, months or years you overstayed) you could be expelled from China after spending a few days or weeks in a local jail, and banned from China for 10 years.
At the border station, you will be asked to explain why you were late in living, and your answer better be a good one, showing a lot of remorse for your actions, a lot of respect for Chinese regulations, and many promises of "never will happen again". You will need to sign a document explaining your offense and why it happened, and pay the fine. If short time, you will be allowed to go on and exit, if you overstayed by a long time, you will be visiting a local jail for a few days until they are ready to deport you.

I've never quite understood why they would hold you and then deport you. It would cost them money to stick you in prison for a while and even more to book you a flight out. Why not just let you board the flight you paid for and ban you from ever entering again?

As punishment. Person wants to leave now, but they hold him/her in prison and THEN deport.

You better have the money for the airplane ticket, since no one else will pay for it, even your Embassy. If not, you wait in jail until you get the money somehow.

According to the new laws it can be up to 10,000 RMB. Didn't a couple of people in Shanghai get fined the maximum amount recently? Also, you will most likely be put on a blacklist and will have a difficult time getting future visas.
