More gripping, if the Chinese ignore road safety rules, spitting, litter, other people by walking into them, beating a wife, showing any consideration for others like being quiet at restaurants. Why are they so dam nosey.?? It's driving me nuts. If I'm using my translator with someone for very long I'll end up with an audience trying to see what I'm doing, or sometimes just one reading over my shoulder. I push them away, This happened last night, i repeated pushing a guy away and pointing to go, I restrained from punching him the next time his head popped in.
I hear someone arguing, running and a woman beaten sometimes, from what I read no one will do anything. I had a woman here yelling on her phone and someone complained about me quarreling (wasn't) to building management, who in turn phoned my girl friend because her name is on my lease. Luck for me lying is acceptable too.
How can they just completely ignore others while they do what they want and yet can't keep their noses out of what others are doing? This just seems to be two extremes. How do you deal with it? How many more steps are there on the culture shock ladder? Dam i miss my dog. Chuck China.
Bad day, ah! Grab a beer.
I bet we all have our day of fury, sometimes it feels like you want to punch everybody in the face.
you don't understand chinese culture. chinese culture is all about maintaining the illusion. as a foreigner you are outside the illusion. anything a chinese person does is acceptable. the person who points out a flaw or a bad act is the guilty party for destroying the illusion. because foreigners are outsiders anything they do wrong is a big deal. if you were to yell into your phone in a theatre you are misbehaving.
look at the the poor girl who was forced to have an abortion 7 months into her preg, even though the act clearly violates Chinese law and all standards of decency. the uproar is because she made that incident public, therefore breaking the illusion. in other words being disharmonious
TedDBayer:
You're right, tim bo dong, Chinees ignore everthing else while they carry on, unless something else is doing something maybe, because they're slow to do things and can't pay attention.
He would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
Keep smiling
Bad days definitely happen Ted, especially in good ol' China. I say get some comfort good whole up with some illegal DVDs of your favorite TV show or movies and just get comfy. I'm in Beijing and its raining like crazy here, perfect weather for that sort of thing. I think Crimochina got it right about the illusion/harmony bit. It can be really frustrating, oh well.
