Be sure you're on the correct visa for your purpose in China and don't overstay if it expires.

the above mentioned and no talking smack about the Chinese gov' or going to protests or underground churches. Don't talk about the 3 "T's" or the FG... Remember the freedom you feel here is an illusion.

First of all, remember that for most of the following infractions, your Embassy or Consulate will be able to do precious little to assist you, particularly if it involves controlled substances.

Do not overstay a visa for any great length of time.

Do not get caught working on an improper visa, particularly at the end of the year or around Spring Festival, when for many reasons, there is an increased vigilance.

Do not get arrested for involvement with controlled substances.  First you will receive a guaranteed prison sentence and then you will be deported. If one were to be egregiously involved with such things, one faces the risk of the death penalty.

Do not get involved in physical brawls of any kind and should this occur, absolutely do not strike first and do not strike back.  Run away if need be.

Do not get into involved political discussions of any kind and as mentioned, avoid the three "T'"s.

Avoid discussing the Catholic Church and its local ramifications. Relations are rather troubled at the moment.

If you must talk about Protestantism and its local variety, keep it bland.

Do not in any way, shape or form get involved with the problems of a certain minority in a certain Western province.  That is probably one of the three best ways to get chucked out these days, if not looked at even more suspiciously.

Do not do what one New Zealander and three Americans did recently in a city near where I live and that was to cross into a military zone with cameras rolling, and that was really dumb, jail time plus deportation.  Their actions caused all of the foreigners in the area the pleasure of police visits late at night.

Truly, 90% of these reasons would land you in trouble at home, too, with the exception of the Three T's and the Catholic Church, at least IMHO.

Get into a bar fight or get caught with drugs.  This will ensure a speedy departure....after some time in the gullag.
