PANDAS!!! they're right there!
Seriously, though, it all depends on what you like to do; history, outdoors or shopping. My advice would be to take a look at a city guide.
I can tell you how to spend TWO weekends out of Chengdu!
1) Go south and visit Leshan. Home to the biggest buddha in the known universe, it's 71m tall and carved into a cliff, like a gargantuan monolith. Leshan is a nice town too, hilly and green and very Chinese. You can try to fit in a trip to Mt Emei too, but that might require a separate weekend.
2) Head north to the Wolong nature reserve. It's a couple hours coach ride north of Chengdu proper, but the rewards are worth it. Thick bamboo forests, wild monkeys (trying to snatch your stuff!) and lots of other animals in big open reserves. And yes, there are pandas there.
Another good place to spend weekend out of Chengdu will be the Gongga mountain, known as King of Sichuan Mountains and located about 320 km southwest of Chengdu. It is the leading peak in the snow-covered mountains of the west of Sichuan with altitude of 7,556 m above the sea level, is the highest mountain in Sichuan Province.
