I have done voice overs before, but not in china. Recently i got an offer to do one. I am being asked to state how i charge. Per minute or hour? Does anyone know the rates in china? Thanks.

I've never heard of a per minute charge. It's usually by the hour and it would be between 100 to 150 rmb. I've done some voice recording myself. That would be the normal rates in China. Good Luck!
mattaya is a scab. That's dirt cheap, normal rates for an amatuer Chinese person maybe.
I actually DO voiceovers professionally. How long is the job? Depending on the client I charge differently. Usually I end up charging 1,000 kuai an hour and that's with a one hour minimum. If it's TV I charge by the commercial length, usually 1,500 kuai for 30 seconds. Your milage may vary, I actually consider myself cheap as it gets me more business and, at the end of the month, that adds up. Some people charge 2,000 kuai per finished recorded minute.
Do you think this is a repeat customer? If so, cut them a break.
Bear in mind, if you get someoone who could be a good customer, charge less. That way you're gonna get four jobs a month at 800 kuai instead of one job a month at 1200. Savvy?

Super! Thanks for the advice nevermind. I think you helped me nail this

No worries, man. Hope it's a repeat. If they offer you an underwhelming amount there's no shame in telling them. Don't be taken advantage of. I currently have five regulars who are nice to work for. I charge em less and for the past year have earned an average of 6,000 a month extra off it. So, it's a good gig to have. Just remember to be really nice to them and don't be difficult to work with, remain patient, Chinese studios can be slow and unorganized.
Nevermind is spot on and I totallt agree with his advice regarding repeat clients. I too, have done voice work and I advise you to not be afraid to ask for a a "comfortable rate". I was once paid 6000yuan for a days work plus some email editing. The job took a grand total of 8 hours. The bucks are there.

My first job, I still don't know how it happened, a girl at work asked me my rate for a 45 minute company video narration. I had no Idea, I had just got into the country. I never had done voicing, but worked in radio, on air....so I said 2,500 kuai. Somehow the message was lost and (I think) they heard I wanted 2,500 per half hour of time. The whole thing took just over 1 1/2 and they handed me big bag of money. I never bothered counting it cause as if this huge oil company was gonna screw me. So, like two weeks goes by and I've been living off this bag. I thought "2,500 should be gone by now" and counted the leftovers. I still had 5,000 left. Sadly.... it's never been that good since.
One question: how would one go about getting into this?
A lot of people comment positively on the depth and power of my voice (done no vocal work of any kind, just a natural, resonant bass), and I'm more than willing to do vocal practice (got Roger Love's 'Vocal Power' and a craptonne of public speaking stuffz) so that assume that willingness is a given and in spades.
