Q: if you hate China, why still stay here?

i visited this website to learn English and i learned that a lot of you hate China, and post a lot of comments expressing your hatred for chinese and china, which sort of broke my heart, by the way. actually a lot of nitizens also discontent with the government, officials and dishonest businessmen, but in general we have family and friends here and we want to do our part to make china better. and my point is you guys have a choice, since you hate here, why you come to china the first place and why you still stay here after you recgonized what china and chinese really is?

This is the best question. Everyone who complain how bad China and Chinese are don't want to go home. Criticize all Chinese. The men are useless, dishonest and cheats and the woman a sex object the no one wants.
If these nitizens are so unhappy and still here then i am happy i am not in there country or city where they come from as it MUST be much worse.
We the western people say... when in Rome............ So what about China??
Here China leads so its the nitizens choice.. follow China or go home....
I am not Chinese and many things is not the way i am used to here but I cant change it, even where ever you came from there sure are many things you not happy about and cant change,,,, so you need to decide but to keep on complaining will not change the situation.
To my experience here in China i found many nitizens who agreed on the job the were offered in China (cause most of then had no job back home). The first month rt two they happy with the income, cheap living and free apartment. The moment they begin forgetting the times they had no income and employment they start to complain about everything here, but they know they cant go back home and live like this or have such a easy job with so little hours work a month,

i think what you dont understand is that we come from a culture that encourages free expression and countries that allow free speech. in china you are not allowed to give honest criticism. This is not a site set up to learn english this is a questions and answers forum. we are not going to ask why you can take a bus to get anywhere in the city, because we know the answer to that (it makes sense) we are going to ask questions about things that dont make sense ie: why dont the subways in shanghai or beijing run overnight even, in intervals of 30 minutes? because does not make sense people do work overnight.
why dont you ask a question ""what do you like about china?" then you could get the positive side and you could just read that to practice your english and it wont damage your fragile little ego

ps whoever told you reading our net english is a good way to practice english is an idiot , we dont use correct english here most of the time especially me

one of the things that gets on my nerves is many chinese will never argue the points you are making and say "that's not true ,,,", but instead they whine about why are you saying it.

crimochina is right we no in a test here we talk how we like to talk be free and express the way you comfortable.
The other point is yes we don't have the same freedom but we here , we need to follow and not try to lead China. I hate many things, i dont like Chinese food and never go to a Chinese or so called beef steak restaurant. i miss good food the most, decent steak, BBQ, ribs...the list goes on.China will and can never be the same as home.... we have to adapt or leave

i think you guys are making 2 mistakes one thinking we only have bad things to say about china, this forum is not setup to discuss the positive aspects of living in china (questions and answers) questions come from seeing and experiencing things that dont make sense.
second, we are not picking on china, get a group of foreigners together and what do we do critic our own countries anyone who is from awestern country knows this, the cat strictly restricts the conversation to china so. questions and answers + china = the negative aspects about living here
this is born out of a culture that believes in order to fix a problem you point out the problem , some chinese believe to fix a problem you ignore it. you tell me what works to tell the truth neither when it come to governments usa government is still f'd up. but we will always critic our government because we truely want it to get better, we are not blind nationalist only concerned about hiding our faults from the outside world.

Fritze it seems to me you have been hit with the stupid stick or you would stop and think before you mouth off. I love China and I have lots of Chinese friends (no foreign friends at all), but at the same time I hate China and I hate Chinese people. This website allows me to vent my discontent and also to understand those things I do not understand. It helps me to accept things and to be more tolerant.

It allows me to vent my frustration and without this outlet, I would eventually hate everything about China and self destruct, but as it is, I am able to reconcile my differences with the Chinese by talking to like minded people on this website. I can learn and grow and have a calm attitude towards the things I see and put up with day after day.

In the end some people only think in black and white, especially those who write without actually giving things the necessary thought and consideration they deserve. When in Rome don't forget who you are, where you come from, your ideals, nor your principals. But please most of all when in Rome please do not use cheap philosophy to encourage idiocy.

I, for myself, will continue unhindered to slay the Chinese and the country of China. I will bitch about the things I don't like, then and when I'm at my darkest hour: The sky will become dark, the ground will tremble, my eyebrows will meet in frown and I will strike them with vengeance and destroy those who so deserve here in the Q+A. Then I will continue my life away from the computer with a smile and The Chinese people will love me and I them as we continue another day tolerating each other and learning.

To all those who like Fritz and the random Chinese who post here. Please remember:
We love to hate China and we hate to love it.

Just because we don't like everything it doesn't mean we have to pack up and leave: that my friends is just common sense.

So the moral is when in China don't express yourself or vent your feelings? I feel if a place or people have issues you try to correct the issues. No one hates the Chinese or China, we hate rude behavior, ignorant people and stupidity. If Fritze would rather accept these things that's his prerogative, I on the other hand choose to say something ... sorry it broke your heart but we have a saying in English: "the truth hurts".... and I have no plans on going anywhere.

GoldenBoy, i didn't say leave if you don't like things... i meant we cant change chine while we here and enjoy the benefits and if China is unbearable you should leave.. You have good answer here the only thing i disagree with you is.....I love China and I have lots of Chinese friends (no foreign friends at all), but at the same time I hate China and I hate Chinese people.....
I cant associate myself with people if i cant stand them yet alone hate them....
Maybe i have a lot to say but in shot i meant..... we have to accept it here or its better to go back home..... if... yes IF its a better place.
Njord is right its more the behvoir and habits Chinese have we cant accept as we live differently, for them its so normal....

i would take the "when in Rome" argument a little bit more seriously if the Chinese weren't famous all over the western world for shutting themselves in their little China towns, and interact as little as possible with the local population. go to any major city in the US or Europe and you'll find a Chinatown.

Read between the lines my friend.

Strong words are used for exaggerative reasons only. The message being exaggerated should be easier to understand. I don't understand why I have to explain it.

Today I went to a restaurant and accidentally broke a glass. They asked me to pay Y58. Laughing out loud
I laughed so hard and took it with good humour (without paying). Thats thanks to me being able to vent a little beforehand. Like I said before:

I love to hate China and I hate to love it.

I explained to them that I spend Y500+ every time I visit and if they don't stop I will not return again. Chinese are so innocent hahaha. They still tried to get Y20 from me lmao!

I admire their stupidity. Love

I don't hate China at all. I don't think I've made many negative comments about it here though. There are many things that the country needs to improve on just like anywhere else. But I've noticed that most negative comments are responses to the posts of nationalistic Chinese people who don't know what they're talking about. Or brainwashed foreigners.

But seriously though, what's up with that pooping and peeing in the streets?

thank you all for your answers.
No one hates the Chinese or China, we hate rude behavior, ignorant people and stupidity, this sentence enlighted me. i was born and grow in China, so i am quite used to the way we chinese behave. and i think maybe the familiarity just blinded my eyes and thought. i hope one day i can have the opportunity to go to anoter country, so i can see china better and learn all the good things from other people
thanks

Claire, what you'll see on these types of message boards is people venting. Don't take it too hard. It would be the same no matter what country we're in.

Claire, learning new cultures allows us to understand our own.

All cultures contain the good the bad and the ugly, and to be honest, I think, if you went abroad you would see the flaws in your culture, but you would also join a website like this to vent about the flaws of the culture in the country you are in.

I was just in China for the first time, i kinda knew what to expect from reading,,, Now I probably had the best vacation ever, even if things didn't work out for me,,because i laugh and make the best of things.. I almost always get home sick but not his time,,
It's not that we hate China,, we love it, but there are things that are not acceptable to me(us). i stayed 5 or 4 star hotels, i went swimming at the Empire in Beijing and had a Chinese man in the pool horking and spitting, the water was too cold, but that was too much,, the attendant asked me why I was going so early and I told him ,cause you hear this guy horking in the pool from down stairs,, WTF I want to swim in his spit? see it's things like that which are discusting to us.
I had scammers run after me as soon as I got off the plane , Beijing was gross for it. Even those that were nice to me, i think they just hung around because i'd buy a round. it's not like that where we come from. I'd be the first to give someone a hand or the shirt off my back if I thought he really needed a sweaty shirt. I did meet some people that I really liked and hung out with, but i don't see any emails from them.Even with the street sweapers, the city is dirty, smelly. Main streets look nice but go up an alley or an older area and see what it looks like without cleaners.People should not live like pigs. I saw a bay while out in the country just covered in floating garbage. And piles of garbage every where in the country. It's not from tourists, but if you want them , the garbage can't stay. And the manners of some people, the pushing, the cars and scooters not stopping,, why would you not complain about such inconsiderate behavior?? Why not fix things and make them better for everyone, show some consideration? Even your construction methods lack, get a big rain (like you don't expect any?) and the streets flood. Besides we complain even about the weather, it's called venting. Get rid of your bad feeling if you have them. If you hold them in you'll be mad longer.

Hating the Chinese and complaining about the Chinese is part of the whole "when in Rome" thing.

It's part of Chinese culture to be amazingly intolerant, to judge people based on their race, and not give people from different countries a fair chance to prove themselves.

Not a day goes by where I'm not insulted on the street, or given white guy lessons ("be more outgoing" or "this foreigner isn't outgoing enough, I'm disappointed"), have American imperialism shoved in my face ("Obama hurts China", etc is really charming considering I'm not American), or worse, or given lessons about basic things like tying my shoes, just to put me in my place.

So, I insult Chinese people, give them unwanted and demeaning lessons, shove their history in their faces, blame the average Chinese for the worst Chinese people, or talk down to them.

I don't scream in their ears, touch them, gang up on them and threaten violence, say rude things in front of them in English or Portuguese on the assumption they wont understand me and then scream "HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND HAHAHAHHAHAHA", call them insulting names like "孙子" or "chink" (cf. "BUDDY" or "洋鬼子" or "美国佬" or many many more), or make fun of them for no reason, so Chinese people who don't know my name still hate me more than I hate them.

I've lived in China long enough that I'm becoming Chinese, which means I'm becoming a hateful racist. Back in the old country, I was actually a pretty liberal, tolerant guy.

I'm pretty sure that most foreigners don't hate China or Chinese people. They just dislike some of the things are that socially normal here...like bad driving, throwing trash on the ground, etc. There are always bad and good things about every country and culture. When you live in a culture that is completely different from your own, there are always things that take time to adjust to. This is a place for people to vent about and discuss both the good and bad about living and working in China. It's an outlet.

Njord:

I agree that there is good and bad in every culture... However... Isn't it safe to say that China has abnormally more "bad" than most cultures around the world?!?

Often there are better ways and without an exchange of ideas, however conflicting , there can be no progress. When I got off the plane in Beijing I found my first squat toilet and decided to wait until I caught a transfer flight to Guilin, take the four hour flight and hour ride to my hotel before i would even try one. I learned later from experience to check door number 4 or 5 for a western toilet. Here is a prime example of a better way of life. The squat toilet, my biggest complaint. My knees are shot, I can't squat. I think a portable colapsible western toilet adapter might be marketable. I have to admit I did like watching women pee standing up over a western toilet and they can aim,, who knew?? Shock Shock

Jnusb416:

Well yeah, we can aim...sort of. I never sit down on a public western toilet, even back home. I do dislike squat toilets though. I see Chinese people squat down everywhere when they don't feel like standing anymore, and they look really comfortable. For some reason I can't. I don't know if it is because my torso is too short compared to my legs or what, but I seriously can't squat for more than a few seconds without sitting down. So squat toilets are very awkward for me, and I try to avoid them as much as possible. Believe me, I know where the western toilets are on campus.

I think the cultural differences are very important for all of us foreigners living in China so this type of questions/answers website is a good way for us to unwind a little, let some steam out...
Some mentioned the fact that, in the west, we are brought up to talk and critizise freely. Usually, it allows us to better ourselves. In China, i feel, people are so used to hearing and being told that their country is the best and doesn't need to change, that when someone makes a little criticism, it becomes a big deal. It's only through criticism that we can better ourselves and China IS NOT the best country in the world. No place is. As they say, the grass always looks greener in the garden next door...
I think if we didn't have a place like this one to just let it all out and realise we all have the same difficulties, we'd all go crazy!
And by the way, China survives because of foreigners and foreign investment so don't wish too much to have us live the country, we are indeed the best thing that has happened to you in a long time!
