Q: Isn't it dangerous for countries to buy Chinese IT products?

Paint me paranoid, but wouldn't there be a security risk for European countries or the U.S. to buy even the simplest IT products made in China? With the 'war' between China and the West pretty much an information war taking place on the net, wouldn't it fairly easy for the Chinese products like computers, routers, etc. to have surveillance devices built in the hardware?

Maybe I watch too many movies :(

What your saying is possible, but not very probable.  The IT products made here are torn apart down to the chip level by many security companies around the world.  If there was even a hint of embedded spy devices, it would make the global news in no time flat.

Besides, it is much easier to monitor what people do on the internet from remote locations.  Packet sniffing can be done remotely and has far less of a chance of being detected.

But then there are companies like Cisco (Linksys) that try to do things like force your router to follow their rules on what websites you can visit and give them complete control over your router settings.  (This was recently changed when people complained en masse.)

You can get as much information, if not more, just by sitting on forums watching people tell you all their hopes and fears. What's more, it's legal and totally sans risk!
