I'm looking for a new ayi and some of the ones I've seen and talked to require me to sign a contract. Is this typical, or am I setting myself up for something I might regret?
I will have no fears in having a contract with an AYI or with anyone else for as long as I knew exactly what was stipulated in the contract, and my rights for termination of it without hardship was clearly stated.
You can write one clearly indicating the obligations and conditions in your mind for the AYI to do, her salary, benefits if any, working hours, and what will be grounds for dismissal in your eyes. Termination with cause will bring no harm to you if you have proof of the wrong deed done.
And if you do the contract, you can write on it your needs and wants, if not accepted then go on to the next interview.
