Q: Is it possible to report a foreign teacher for sexual harassment in another university/school?
I have a Chinese friend who studies at Shenzhen university. Last time I spoke to her she was a little edgy and frightened after telling me about a 30-40 year old foreign teacher who kept asking if he could "hold her by the waist" and "lift her up" because she looked "so tiny and light". She went on to tell me how he's been approaching female students outside of his classes like this and knows for sure of one account where he quasi-molested one of them.
For some f***ing reason she's too afraid/unwilling to do anything about it, doesn't want to get into trouble or some other incomprehensibly insane reason. I obviously don't work in that university, but I'm seriously considering going to the board of that department and dropping a formal complaint...
Shit like this disgusts me.

I knew a guy like that a few years back. He got fired twice for that exact reason, wanting to hold the students and "lift them". Strange.! Anyways, he kept getting new jobs no matter what he did.
So I wonder if you would be doing anyone any favors. The girl may even be questioned and from what you said, she doesn't want that. Tough situation. Oddly enough, this may backfire on you.
If you trust your friend try and get her to make a complaint,if you complain its just gossip with no known grounds,but i also agree that he should be sacked if this is true.You could also come to the attention of the PSB which is never a good thing,even if your intentions are good
tell your friend to record his conservation or make a video whenever he is picking up the student or doing some hanky panky, have some evidence with you and then drop a complain in university legal office, or simple grasp this guy and make him understand, if he does not understand , teach him a lesson and if there is some rules about sexual harassment in Chinese working place so better report it out, report it then see what happens.... people will think it its rumor or gossip and when someone else reported this it will not remain gossip. best of luck.
Be very careful. If you are not believed, the "Lifting Teacher" could file charges against you and you could be forced to pay.
for me the first thing is to build the girls self esteem and help her to realize she needs to be strong and stand up for herself
I bet if he tried to touch her and she give him a verbal blast in front of other people he would be on the back foot and duck for cover as everybody will be talking about it
It is like bullying they back off when people stand up to them.

It isn't uncommon for victims of sex crimes (harrassment, assault) to not want to report the crime in "normal" circumstances. It's hell going through the questioning and whatever may follow.
Suggest, very patiently, to your friend that she get together with the girls who he has done this to and they go as a group to the administration and report him. Power in numbers. Safety in numbers, too.
And if she doesn't want to, you have to respect that. If you do decide to report it, please don't name her. That would make things even worse for her.

When you are raped, all you want to do is bath in bleach. Most aren't thinking in an "evidence" frame of mind. And many that do, are intimidated by the entire process. The hours at the hospital being what feels like re-violation, poked and proded. Answering questions not only about the rape, but sexual activity before the rape. The HIV testing. The worrying about pregnancy.
And then the police and the prosecutor and the trial if it goes that far. It's all very overwhelming.
And all you want to do is sit in bleach.

Indeed. Many times the investigative procedure is a real nightmare. The probing insensitive questions, the hints that she may have "led him on", having to retell the ordeal again and again and again to the police, the prosecutor, the doctor, the social worker the nurse, etc. many of whom make asinine comments like "why didnt you fight harder" or "why did you wear that dress" or what were you doing at that time outside your home" etc.
And if the case goes to trial, the defense attorney will do his or her best to make the victim seem like the one responsible for the rape. Humiliation, re-living the ordeal and maybe all for nothing if the jury does not believe her.
I don't condone this behavior at all, but I just want to point out that this type of thing is not at all rare, and that it isn't a particularly harmful type of sexual advance.
Sexual advances become sexual harassment when they cross the line into "intimidation, bullying, or coercion" according to wikipedia. Telling students he wants to pick them up is certainly inappropriate, but it isn't exactly going to leave emotional scars.

For some women, it won't be a big deal. For others, they will process it differently and it can be a huge deal. For you to say it won't leave any scars, isn't a fair judgement at all.

Crimo and Hug - I should ask what planet YOU are from. Both of you obviously have serious white knight disorders. I don't defend this behavior, and I do think that the teacher should be reprimanded and possibly fired if he continues to behave this way. But I think you should be careful what you say he actually did and not exaggerate its effects.
To draw an analogy, you are saying that because robbers ask us for our money, and because beggars ask us for our money as well, then beggars are guilty of robbery.
Occasional inappropriate comments are not sexual harassment, they are inappropriate sexual advances. He can cross the line - and that happens when he repeats the behavior insistently, escalates it, or actually becomes romantically involved with a student. In the first two cases, that's sexual harassment, in the second it is rape. But where he stands right now, it is not rape.
I think it is even more ridiculous to equate this behavior with rape and it is disrespectful to real rape victims. You're equating a horrific, brutal crime that leaves real physical and emotional scars with off-color comments that cause a few moments of awkwardness.
Sadly, though, your point of view is a "normal" one, and being normal is the same as being correct, right?

I DID say that people process things differently. And for YOU to say that it won't leave emotional scars is narrow-minded of you. YOU have no idea what any action can trigger in another human. In order for any legal ramifications of sexual misbehaviour or scaming or almost anything in legality in China, you will need proof, photos and a handwritten statement from both the victim and the abuser. Voice recordings are a hit and miss.
Oh really ? But why don't you ask yourself about what education received that girls in their families ??? Chinese families never talk with girls/boys about sex , about sex abuse and even about be a possible victime if they dress so sofisticated at their age, put a lot of make up , if not this, then sexy dresses ! How many Chinese students know something about HIV or other sexual illness here ???? How many of you learn this in the school ??? or in your family ??? No one , because this is your culture, nobody teach you ! I was student too, I had teachers men too, but nobody was doing this because my own comportament didn't allow them this ! I was working in China and a Chinese boss was ready to die just to have me as his mistress ! I just step out of that company and leaved him to die ! If you as girl alllow men do anything from you, then they will do, be sure ! And this happen because there is not family education and school education ! But you have free access to internet in novadays, why don't you read medcal websites and education websites about life , sexual life and public education ? ? ? Instead to spend 12 hours connected on QQ to talk with friends who no have more education level than you anyway, better learn something new !
Also this ad sound like a girl want to earn some money from a foreigner teacher . Me personal, I don't believe that a foreigner in China where is a strictly system, would do something like this, but a Chinese girl would do or say everything to police to can earn some money from him ! Is all possible ! So.. is dangerous to teach in China dear teachers.....

I appreciate the vote of confidence Aylin, however, I have seen some foreign teachers try to take advantage of their position and inappropriately touch or hug their students.
There are good and slimy teachers just like there are good and slimy students.
Aylin, that could be true but highly unlikely if she is actually wanting to go public with it
