Q: My doctor called me very beautiful?

I have been seeing my doctor for about a month every week he is an herbalist. Sometimes I thought he was awkward with me then today he comes to get me from the waiting room. And as we are walking to his office he tells me u look very beautiful. I was flattered but now I don't know what to expect cause he never said that before. How should I take it when a man from China calls me very beautiful? I've been called pretty from other Asians before but never very beautiful. Kinda wondering what it means from Chinese culture I'm black and Asian race myself

Take it as a compliment!

Then consider that he might want to ask you for a date. He might be taking his time to work up to this. If you are not interested then have a good excuse ready for this time so he doesn''t lose face when you reject him.

Yes, or you might end up in some hotwater.
You don't want to be on the receiving end of a Chinese doctor who just lost face.

Simple, but perhaps effective, would be 'In my country, it's considered immoral/unethical to date a patient".

Alternatively, tell him you've got a fiance back in your home country.

It means he is trying to be polite.

I have been called "very handsome" a million times. I take it with a grain of salt because Chinese use this as a method of being polite, conversation and emotional manipulation.

I am sure you have also been complimented about...

Your amazing Chinese skills after saying only "Ni hao"...

Your amazing chopsticks skills...

Your amazing ability to accomplish a simple task like cooking rice...

It is more like being patronized but without the malicious intent.

So is it a cultural thing in China? In USA when someone calls you pretty are beautiful they usually genuinely mean it. Im used to getting called beautiful but always wondered what it means coming from a Chinese person. He has lived here in America for quite sometime. And I have been seeing him every week. Except this time I had a different hairstyle it was down my hair is usually pulled back. I figured if it was my hair he wouldve said your hair looks nice. But he said I looked very beautiful and waited to we were in his office away from the other nurses..

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
