Q: 'Nowism' - anyone else victim of company's/school's lack of planning?

At my school, it's always last minute with everything. No one gets warned of when things go down, and when they do, us foreign teachers at the school usually find out after it's already been implemented.

Some of us had been warned before coming of 'Nowism'. Is this just a warning given to expat teachers or does it apply on a wider scale?

What??? You mean some places actually give you warning? Or are actually prepared ahead of time! RUBBISH! I think it's actually illegal (certainly immoral)!

I always do a lesson about the theme "planning in advance" portraying the cultural differences that you are in fact experiencing.

kchur:

That's a good idea. Sometimes I feel afraid for the students of mine who are planning to go abroad.

I've only experienced this in a mild fashion. Although I am told about things shortly before they happen, such as holidays or military training, I'm usually told at least the day before, if not several days in advance. Once I wasn't told, but it wasn't a big deal. I think I'm lucky.

The only reason I even knew about the freaking National Holiday before it happened was because the school had to switch the weekend classes because of the make up days and sent out a message like 2 days before . When they told me that I was like ... huh ? What National Holiday ?? Smh

Every place I've worked at at China has been like that. Right now, I get my daily schedule a half hour after work starts, and it generally changes about a couple times a day.

When I was working a desk job it was ten times worse. There would be long streches where everyone had absolutely nothing to do, then some middle manager would wander in and remember something had to have been done yesterday, so he'd give us a five hour task with a ten minute deadline. Seems universal here and the Chinese don't seem to think it's strange at all.

It's a wider scale...it depends on the level your at..if your not getting told much of anything then they may think you are just low...take this as an example in the military the first one's to know something is the one's at the top of the chain of command..if there is a chain of command and your not getting told until the last minute it means your at the bottom of the chain of command....you have to ask questions it's not the other way around. cheeky
