Find a local partner who at least has some idea about the bureaucratic maze you are about to enter

Alternatively, contact your embassy.

Most embassies have a section (at least mine does) that will put you in contact with compatriots who already have a business in China.

I would not attempt this sort of thing on my own without either of the above examples of assistance.

If you want to own it yourself then you need to form a WFOE (Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise). You'll need a lawyer who specialises.

I can only relate the rules/costs to Guangzhou as my boss is currently forming one:

1) you need to rent an office as the company address. You might get away with a virtual one but need to speak to the lawyer. The office has to be licenced for commercial use so not all apartments can also be used as offices.

2) there is a minimum investment required that must come from outside China GZ is about 300,000RMB. Beijing might be different.

3) Lawyer. The guy in GZ is charging 20,000rmb to set up the company. He also charges a monthly fee for basic accounting services (enough to comply with Chinese laws)

4) you need a Chinese name for the company which the lawyer can help to check if it is okay

5) You can then employ yourself & get a WP/RP as the owner/employee.

Thats the basics from memory.
