Q: Teaching hours at your school

Hey, I saw this question asked already but was trying to see if university or elementary made a difference.  I wanted to know how teaching hours were measured, I was contracted for 18 and my schedule has 22 classes they are saying it is because the 40 minutes are added. All the other positions I had measured a teaching hour based off a class period. Is this a standard practice for elementary schools in china.

Does your contract says that you must have 18 classes or 18 teaching hours per week? This is a big difference.

 

My contract goes like "12 classes of 40 minutes each per week", if they want me to do more I get 300RMB per extra class added to my salary and must be notified at least 48 hours ahead so that I have time to prepare the extra lessons.

 

Locals always ask for very specific contracts because they know that otherwise their boss will try to screw them, do the same next time.

I have worked in elementary schools that have done both. At one school it was 20 teaching hours=20 classes (at 40 minutes each), another school 20 teaching hours= 25 classes (at 45 minutes each added together).

 

Wording in the contract is everything. And yes, if its not clear in the contract the school can and most likely will use it to their advantage. As a student of mine says, it "so sucks" lol. Just remember this when its time to sign your next contract:)

I was invited for an interview with a school in Wuhan 3 weeks past. Sounded fine in the phone conversation. However the interview threw up some extra's [1] they  would not make application for a work visa or FEC [2] salary had to paid cash in hand [3] I was required to travel between 3 different schools each day, which involved  taxi and metro journeys. Working 5 days until 8-8:30 pm,  possibility of being required to work on any of your days off, extra classes 80-100 rmb. Well was'nt  I lucky. I was impressed with the facilities at the first school even had swimming pool. How lack of contract and someone having too much grip over one, was just a little too much. I asked on 3 occasions as to why the previous teach left in  a hurry, each time to question was side lined. Needless o say I decined.

a month for teaching a normal load of 18 hours during a regular five-day week. Overtime is paid at a rate of *** RMB per hour if he/she exceeds the 18 hours teaching period.

If you signed Contract, term 'standard practice' doesn't exist. You're required to work as many hours as Contract state. 

One should be careful with term 'hour' on the Contract. It should be clearly stated it's ''60' hour'' or it's ''40'-50' teaching hour''. 

My last primary School Contract stated '10 (full) hours per week'. My schedule contained 14 x 40' classes per week.

If School schedule more classes than per Contract it is 'Contract violation' (if FT didn't agree), which warrant quitting (and keeping RPermit intact), because of more hours than per Contract.
