Q: Is there any English speaking western city with more representation in China than Vancouver?

It seems every Canadian I know is from there. If you go to a pub for a Canucks game it usually draws the most people. A vendor once told me she sells twice as many Canuck jersies as any other team. I've met people who know the same people as me back home. I once met a girl who grew up in my neighbourhood in Vancouver and knew my sisters.

Why are their so many Vancouverites here? I would say it's the city's Chinese heritage, but I know tons of non-CBC Vancouverites here. What gives?

It's cool though. When I visit Vancouver now I have a whole new perspective on the city cause I speak and read a bit of Chinese now and get the culture. So, in heavily Chinese parts of the city it's a neat trip.

It could be that Vancouver and Canada don't have as many people. That's probably why you met someone you knew back home. As far as an English speaking western city with more representation in China than Vancouver I'm sure either LA or NY has more.

nevermind:

There's still 2.5 million people there. I'm pretty sure I don't know 2.5 million people.

I might even venture to say Sydney or London here.  I have met a disporportionate share of people from Los Angeles, however, so perhaps Mattaya might be on the mark.  Then again, I have met a goodly amount of people from Sydney, too.  Actually, in terms of New Yorkers, I have met far fewer of those than the others.

nevermind:

Oddly, as far as Americans goes, I have met tons from Milwuakee.

It was always something I paid little attention to until living in China....I totally understand what you mean about going home with a new perspective on the Chinese culture and language.
One funny thing...with all the bad rap Chinese drivers get in Van...after being here for only a few weeks...I was like...ok...I understand now...it all makes sense.
There are large Chinese communities all over the world, but you would be hard pressed to find one as truley global as Vancouver is....with such a huge proportion of the overall population being of Chinese heritage (25% almost).
I find most people here know about Vancouver...or have family there...or want to live there.

Richmond is a city connected to Vancouver and is almost completely infiltrated with Chinese. Add that to Chinatown and yes, Vancouver is certainly #1. I spent 12 years there so I'm speaking from experience. I haven't been to Milwaulkee or the other cities but I haven't heard of entire towns known for it's population of Chinese. I'm talking millions here people. Not a few scattered around here and there.
