Q: Is there a legal way to extend a residence permit or visa over the summer to job hunt?
Mine expires at the end of the semester. I'd like to move and job search afterwards rather than by email and telephone.

Your work permit and your residence permit are tied to your place of employment, so technically if it ends and it is not renewed (your work contract), they will not extend your stay and you will have to leave. But what stops you from contacting places of employment in other cities that may interest you, and have a potential new employer lined up before the summer?. If not, go to Hong Kong and try hard to get a tourist visa to re enter China.
I will not give up based on the above, go to PSB and ask them the question, you may find a nice person there that may give you a better answer
Sorry but no, you should be looking for employment now so you won't run into any problems later
