Q: using google/yahoo in china
Why is it that when you send emails to a person in china and you use yahoo/google some emails go through? I know this subject has been discussed before and its been awhile ago But is it because it depends on the content of what is in the emails that they are allowed? Just curious. and please, no attacking or insults or name calling!

The Chinese internet makes about as much sense as the female orgasm. What seems to work like a charm sometimes may at other times be hopelessly impossible to attain. I'm pretty sure Uncle Xi isn't reading your emails though. He's a busy man.

Google has been blocked here for some time and so gmail can be unreliable sometimes.
Also, a few months ago there was a big government meeting and they were scared of something happening that would embarrass them so they pretty much shut down the internet and VPNs. It hasn't really come right since then.
The government is wary (I've heard the word terrified) of any information from outside of China so the internet filters have been tightened a lot.
I don't know if your email content is a factor, I have had emails not arrive and they were nothing China related at all so I think it's probably just the new firewall filters or whatever making the internet unusable unless you're using Chinese websites.
You may want to look into using wechat or QQ. Especially wechat. Both can be used from a computer or smartphone, and they're Chinese so aren't blocked in China.

Anyway, that's how things work here, chabuduo style. It's something you have to get used to.
I know this is crazy talk, but you could just get a live.com or other Microsoft email address. I have no issues. Redirect other mail to this new account. Easy.
Oh, and I think your mom just said to say "Hi"
Ok thanks for the info. @wolf, no im not in china yet but plan on going there soon no date as of when yet. And no, your suggestions along as stiggs suggestions as alternitive communication choices dont seem crazy.
I've been using yahoo mail for years in China, and have never had a problem sending/receiving messages to people outside of China. Are you SURE that your emails aren't being received? Maybe "screened" is a more applicable word.

spider, im sending me emails TO china from the USA none has been rejected or refused, all make it Sometimes some take longer making me wonder if they made it to whom i sent it too.The first one i sent to a different person a week ago asked ''was this a test?'' From then on all made it through. But sometimes i still wonder,
make sure you remember all of your security measures for your yahoo, when they pick up your log on in china, flags and whistles go off and you will be asked to confirm security questions, same thing with facebook when you use a vpn.

update on yahoo, warren buffet is in the process of buying yahoo and should be done by the end of the year.

gilbert will buy the company with a loan from buffet, priority debt, preferred shares, etc, and some equity, if gilbert fails buffet will get the whole company as collateral. terms and paperwork will take a while. its a done deal.ambivalentmace:
i hope the deal goes through and not the bid from verizon, verizon will just screw the company up badly.
i think buffet should walk away from the whole deal, i dont think yahoo is worth much anymore, only old farts use it like me and the younger generation does not even recognize the name. I have never seen a chinese person under 30 use yahoo for anything, same thing in america. Dan will have a lot of work to do.
