Q: Was Mao evil or just incompetent?

It seems he wasn't sadistic, just dumb. Not like Pol Pot or Stalin. Yet more died because of him.

After a certain number directly attributable deaths the moral question becomes void of meaning. Who knows what that number actually is though.

The people believed in him and did everything he said. Did they believe too greatly in him? It's easy to say you want freedom and equality and all of that, but it can be difficult to operate a country, especially from scratch. I just hope people can learn from his mistakes.

when westerner talk about Mao, most tread he as same as Stalin. one episode in " The Simpson"  the  Homer said Mao is angel who killed XXX million peoples.(i forget the number he said).

Stalin is a extremely   selfish leader , he could kill anyone who stand on his way of his power. he brutal treat his country and commons in the war and after war.

but for Mao whatever in WWII or Civil war, he still stand with common people when he fought with authority. especially in civil war, he and communist win just because they got most chinese people supports.  and  we will never forget his achievements.

after founding of the people republic of china, they truly bring china from poor and backward country into modern society. and no one can deny it , but as same time.  he also made huge mistake ! he too want beyond the west , so he and communist made "great leap forward "campaign, he was afraid people lost their spirit so he support the “”cultural revolution" .  his and communist mistake caused common people died and we will never forget too

so he is not a evil man, he just a  human who made great achievements and big mistake. he is not selfish man, he thought he done was right for china.  he love this country and his people.

kchur:

He was a fat guy (don't ask me to explain why you chinese love fat guys so much) who was good at riling up people into the type of violent insanity needed to win the civil war. But when it came time to put his dumbfuck know-it-all theories into use he accidentally caused the greatest famine on earth, when that didn't work, got a bunch of redguards to destroy most of your five thousand year history. Sounds like a fairly typical arrogant, ignorant Chinese man, just one who managed to bullshit his way to the top.

And now most you fucking idiot Chinese blame foreigner "conspiracy harmful rape policy differences" for most of the destruction Mao ordered and regular, easily-led Chinese people happily carried out. Fuck you, you naive idiot. Stay the hell away from foreign countries. You should build a newer, bigger great wall to keep yourselves in your filthy, disgusting, polluted, destroyed, corrupt country, away from humans, where you belong.

Get this straight: modern Chinese culture is built on ignorant males destroying China. And with Mao having destroyed ancient Chinese culture (which has nothing to do whatsoever with modern Chinese culture), any Chinese man put into a position of responsibiity will do his part to destroy China. Always, without exception. China is a self-destroying machine, and Mao was just a fairly typical Chinese ruler. The same type you've had since the Jurchen invaded.

MissA:

Icerock, as I'm sure you're aware, Mao was also an advocate of political violence, and his political opponents were treated very harshly. In short, he was utterly ruthless. In any case, I'd always thought the structural changes made to the Chinese economy which facilitated China's current run of economic growth, were attributable to the Deng Xiaoping era. In that case, you can't give the 'people's republic' as envisioned by Mao credit for China's economic success, and the economy at present is an example of the most rampant capitalism you could hope to find!

I'm not sure Mao was in the same class as Stalin, though.... now there was a crazy bastard.

nevermind:

I certainly wouldn't say China is less backward and more modern because of Mao. I mean, Taiwan is way ahead and China is just bonkers.

But, Kchur, Icerock is always pretty okay on here.

I have never EVER seen icerock troll anyone. I do not always agree with him, but his views are always presented sensibly.  Never seen him have a meltdown either.

In fact, I wish he would post more.

I'd say the cultural revolution, with so many deaths, and destroying so much of China's tangible cultural heritage, counts as spectacular incompetence.

Evil? That's a much, much harder question. I'm sure he thought he was doing the right thing. But then, does believing an action is right automatically mean that you receive a reputational get-out-of-gaol-free card? I'd say no.

To wrestle down so many Chinese for such a long time is genius. Just try yourself with one of them.

Evil....he knew what he was doing...he killed more people during the cultural revolution than Stalin did after WWII.  If hell really does exist then he is rotting there.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
