Q: Is Wechat just a ripoff of Line?

I came to China before most people had smartphones, so I'm not privy to all the different mobile social apps out there. My Chinese friends boast about how Wechat is such a great thing that China invented, but then I found out that Line is basically the same thing and when I tried to make an account on my phone I couldn't receive a phone verification message to register. So was Line allowed in China before and then China created Wechat off of it and then blocked Line?

Pretty much all tech based products in China are rip offs of other countries work. The Chinese education system destroys all creativity sadly. Those with flair usually leave the country. It is something the CCP is willing to live with as the system also reduces bravery.

Bebo or other social networks predate wechat. Doubt most Chinese would claim their country was central to the development of social networking. It clearly started in america. Wechat is quite good though if you like that sort of thing
