Q: Welcome to the "B" Talent my fellow Teachers

B and C Workers
Category B workers are foreign professionals whose skills are in accordance with China’s urgent economic and social needs. Applicants must hold a BA or higher and have two or more years of relevant work experience. Those who did not study at a top 100 university or college in their home country must hold an MA or above. Foreign teachers should teach in their native language, hold a BA or above from a university in their native language and have at least two years of experience working in language education. They must score at least 60 points on the new scoring system for foreign professionals.

So looks like for ESL teachers we needed to have 2 years of exp, next our degree needs to be at least a BA/BS from a university where you studied something in the English language, like say you studied in France, studied accounting, if so it must have been a course that was taught to you in English, not in French.

How we get the 60 points on a test is the next million dollar question, I don't really believe that they will consider our years in China or our Chinese speaking skills. If so maybe only 2 points. Thats my guess.

I don't get the "Foreign teachers must teach in their native language" part. Does that mean you need to be a native english speaker to teach it ?!

And to get relevant work experience in education you have to be a teacher, right? But then, at least in Germany ,you need a Master and a 2 years preperation course...

ironman510:

It means if you didn't study in a English speaking country your degree course must have at least been taught to you in English if you're gonna teach English in China. But if you come here to teach Korean than your degree needs to be a degree course that was taught in Korean, doesn't have to be from Korea but at least taught to you in Korean.

Are you sure? Because nowhere in the article he stated it that way.

If your degree is in chemistry and you wanna be a chemistry teacher in China. Then no problem. But you said before you were from Germany, right? If you are trying to become an English teacher than there might be no way with this new law when it comes to teaching English, now if you are teaching German, than as you can see there would be no problem. As you know in Germany only 272,504 are native speakers of English, so that wouldn't allow Germany to be a considered as a native English speaking country, exmaple like 4,930,510 are native English speakers in South Africa and that's why China gave them the nod to allow them to teach English and all they'll need is a BA/BS degree. So I'm afraid you're stuck, looks like Chemistry is your best chance if you have 2 provable years of teaching it.

Yes I am from germany and I aspire to be a chemistry teacher, but if this article is correct I can forget that, because they said I must teach in my native language!

But it seems like foreign subject teachers in china have to conduct their lessons in english, which means that even as a chemistry teacher you have to be a native...

According to this article my only chance would be to be a german teacher since I doubt that there is a demand for chemistry teachers who conduct their lessons in german...

Sorry man, China really doesn't want any of us here, so it feels at times. They only want Bill Gates or PhD people here now, I guess they think the local China market is ready to replace us now.

Maybe the government thinks so, but the market situation shows a very different picture.

I looked at many job ads and the salarys are quite high for foreigners and the requirements are lower to so it seems quite the opposite, so I can't understand why the government would do such a thing.

Is this source even legit, this is the only site where something like this is stated.

Agreed or Perhaps we have to use that old fashion saying: There must be something they know that we don't. (But judging by my experience here for 9 years I think they themselves don't know.)

Never mind the new rules, it will only push more people into illegal working, tax free income and that much less money into the pockets of the CCP.

Actually, I encourage everyone on non-working visa to get part time gigs, you get more per hour and you don't need to pay taxes. Why would you bother slaving yourself away to some crook employer when you can be independent and earn twice as much.

Stop taking full time gigs, no waijiao, no customers, they all run out of business and that many students are in search for new teachers, you.

Just work part time and make more money, you are illegal regardless of full or part time anyway.

ironman510:

I agree part time can be great but also risky when it comes to students canceling too often, you never know when you'll have a bad month or didn't make enough, for a single guy/girl sure its great. But for Married folks supporting family I think full time jobs are safer even if the new rules require a one time headache..

Yes. But there are companies out here who require students to pay for 1 semester at a time, no refund. Which ensures a steady stream of classes for the teacher. Of course said companies take a cut but they usually still pay the Foreign teachers 250-300 per hour which is a reasonable rate.

So what? China makes many rules and laws but never really seems to enforce them.

And even if they did, just make some guanxi with the right people and they will turn their heads as long as you don't get yourself in the spotlight by kicking some Chinese lady off her eBike or getting into a local bar fight...

How can an English teacher get guanxi you ask? Easy, by giving discounted or free rates to the right people and their children. In smaller cities, this is especially easy. The Chinese media can say whatever they want... rarely is it ever the truth.

ironman510:

I have to say Shenzhen has forced the laws all the way in the last 3 years when it came to the new Visa policies, just this year 4 of our new teachers had to go home to get their degrees signed by the university than authenticated by the China Embassy in their home country (Or where ever you earned your degree.). BUT I do agree that people with different passports will earn them more points that will get you over the 60 point hump that makes that person B even if they are actually lacking in some ares. (There's a test we'll be taking next year.)
