Q: What is the gay "scene" like in China?

I know it must vary province to province, but in general what would it be like? How easy/difficult would it be to find other gay people to hang out with? I'll be in Zibo, Shandong Province.

If straight men like China because of the women, you'll like China because most men look musical.

WanderingTeacher:

Lol musical? haha Interesting...

I kept getting approached by strange gay men. I even had a gay stalker for a bit, it was... bizarre. That guy was such a freaking pervert that even I was offended.

Then I kept getting random requests for gay sex, or some guys asking me if I was gay. Honestly... there's a lot of gay dudes in China.

WanderingTeacher:

lol, I'm sorry you got gay-stalked. I would probably feel the same way if I got stalked by a woman. So how does one find these gay guys?

Overall, the operative word is "quite discreet", they won't display openly that they are homosexual, they beat around the bushes a bit, etc. But ok, I've been approached once while doing my running routine at the stadium, a handsome and impressively built dude. He would be very sympathetic, quickly asking if I was single, that we could hang around, that I might cook for him, etc. Bad luck for him, I'm into girls. Anyway, there's hope for romance ^^

WanderingTeacher:

Thanks Dr Monkey, I'm not getting my hopes up for love, but companionship would be nice.

My guess is the gay scene, on the whole, is.........covert. I've made one or two gay friends here over the years though; one of which was a Japanese guy called Shu. Had to admire his sand, he was openly gay and openly.......Japanese. Quite a character. Sax player too; sometimes we'd take our saxes to a barbeque market and get drunk entertaining the punters. One time I remember a couple of Chinese blokes came over and one of them made an offensive remark about 'little Japan' so I dedicated a tune to him: (in English of course. The guy couldn't understand a word) "This one's called, 'My Wife's F***ing My Best Friend'. And it's just for you. Kick it Shu."

WanderingTeacher:

Hahaha I love that story! Good man Martian, Good man! :)

I'm not sure! My a$$ is 'one-way only', similar as in traffic: 'no traffic in wrong direction.

Not being of that way inclined too, but seeing nothing wrong with it......

In most parts of China "gayness" is hidden. In 1st tier cities it is a little more open, but not much.

I had one girl student who swore 100% that she had never met a gay person.....she must have obviously but just didn't know.

I've met a few Chinese gay people, but they all end up getting married to keep things secret & not to disappoint their family...so after one kid and the duty is done...thats it.

I feel sorry for the wife as she's sort of living a lie too.

The bloke usually carries on behind the wife's back with a boyfriend.

Or sometimes it all comes out at the wedding.......

Oooppss!

WanderingTeacher:

Ahh, that's unfortunate...but I get the societal stigma. I'm not looking for marriage though, just a cool friend, so hopefully it wont be that difficult.

I am sure you will find out when you ask a Chinese person of the same sex you are.

WanderingTeacher:

I wouldn't ask that question to someone in China. I know sexuality in other countries are not as open so that wouldn't be a question I would ask someone I don't know that well, even more so with a language barrier between us.

Amongst the ~10 good Chinese friends I made those last six months (in Hangzhou), at least two are openly gay, then I guess it's not that difficult to find a consequent scene if you are looking for it. In addition both of them were in couple (not together), and didn't hide or lie about their orientation.

For what I've seen (young) Chinese people are totally fine with it, even if the law isn't (though which I didn't read the law article)

In big cities like Beijing and Shanghai there's a fairly vibrant, but small, gay scene. There are a few clubs in Shanghai - Obama (yes, that's the name), Eddie's Bar and one or two others. Beijing has Funky, Destination and Alpha (Fri Nights). Most towns will have one small gay bar, but some have next to nothing. You can look on the website, Utopia, a great gay resource for all things gay in Asia. Or try the mobile 'social' apps that are big in China: Jack'd or Blued. You will find thousands of gay guys right near you. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help show you the town. Tongue

take a trip to chongqing. Gay capital of China. Pretty out in the open there. You can point out the gay bars by the massive posters of buff white dudes plastered outside the places.
