Q: What is the latest you have ever been paid for a teaching gig?

the question about rent money got my dander up a little

last summer a friend worked for new oriental in beijing for an english camp, cant work in jinan new oriental because he was black, another story, another time,

he received his pay november 15 for the july and august work,

so what is the latest you got paid, i have one job that never paid me but i got my money other ways,

please forgive the word "gig" but many chinese think we are entertainers instead of teachers, so why bust their perception bubble with a little reality.

slight disclaimer, in my city , there are new oriental schools that copy the name and dont belong to new oriental, imagine the idea of copying another schools name to make money,

I worked for Nanjing New Oriental at the Summer Camp for 4 years. First year, I was paid 135 Rmb/h, some 120h altogether.

Last year, my pay at the same Camp was 175 Rmb, but for only 80h. US manager was replaced by Chinese manager. And I was replaced (for the last 10 days of the Camp) by FT from Africa, probably student with much lower pay.
In NO, students evaluate Camp and FT at the end. NO Camp manager (American) increased my pay every year, based on the students comments.

when did you get your pay 30 days later, 10 days later? chinese boss replacing with cheaper labor is no surprise, but im sure the comments about it will be an eye opener.

icnif77:

I received pay on August 10th for the finished classes in July, and for the classes in August, I received pay by September 10th. Camp starts on July 15th, with last day on August 15th. NO made me open Bank account at Nanjing China Everbright Bank, where they deposited my pay. Students teacher's evaluation is the rule in every NO School.

'add-it': I signed Contract with NO for every Camp, and if 'no pay', I would stop by SAFEA with complain. It depends, what visa your friend is holding. If RPermit, advice him to go to SAFEA, and if any other visa, I would call SAFEA by phone seeking info. SAFEA will advice him, if he's in boundaries of the Chinese law, and entitled for their 'protection' and help.

Damn, he's patient. I was once paid a month late. Our lazy-ass HR child did not want to start processing our paychecks in time for them to come through BEFORE Dragon Boat Festival (apparently, it would have cut into her naptime), and she forgot to do it after. Of course, she lied to everyone who called her and said that the problem was ICBC's fault.

So, off all 40-something angry FTs went to the nearest ICBC and talked to the manager, who produced definative proof that she had not even gone to the damn bank at that point. Then, we called her from ICBC, asked her to retell her lie, and handed the phone to the bank manager. It was rather glorious. If I had not been so angry at the time, I would really have enjoyed it.

the worst one i ever experienced was a good private middle school, the ft bailed in october, so i finished the guys contract while working somewhere else, they were grateful and never gave me problems but when i came back after spring festival, the chinese teachers received 3 months pay, jan, feb, mar, on april 30, i cant imagine have no money for spring festival and getting all your money that late, but they do this every year. the ft's were always paid on time twice a month though.

icnif77:

Repeated 'late pay' is a Contract breach, and can be cause for termination, if on RPermit.

You can quit immediately, and keep your RP. Ask SAFEA for help with the last pay and required docs. for work in the new School.

'Moonlightning' at another School is against Chinese Law, and I guess SAFEA would reply negatively.

However, I would still make a claim, just to put School's name on their records. Maybe, they would press your School for pay, because School requested your help/work to replace 'no show' FT.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
