Q: What poisonous snakes can be found in China?

I don't like snakes. I was worried I might see a cobra. Has any one ever seen a poisonous snake? I think there are 10 types in China. Or have they all been eaten,, suit me fine.

Here are a few:

Tortoise Snake,
Taiwan famous Hundred Pacer,
Sharp-Nosed Pit Viper,
Taiwan Banded Krait,
Chinese Cobra,
Pit viper,
Boomslang,
Bush viper,
Egyptian cobra,
Gaboon viper,
Green mamba,
Green tree pit viper,
Habu pit viper,
King cobra.

Some are endangered species. I read that if you see a snake it will try to escape from you so don't move until it leaves, that is if it has an escape route if not you will be bitten.
A Chinese scientist said the best thing to do in case of a snake bite is to remove all jewelry and remain calm and relaxed. I also heard it is not a good idea to cut the wound or suck the blood from the bite. You can be rest assured that snakes are rarely found in cities so you can sleep at night without having to worry about an Anaconda hugging you in your sleep Wink . Just be careful in the countryside especially paddy fields (lots of nasty things live there).

Yes, I have heard of snake bites in rural areas. Unfortunately, poor people who get bitten usually die. Also there are less snakes in certain areas of China and more in others.

If you do get bitten apply a crepe bandage around the limb going up towards your heart e.g if you get bitten on the lower leg wrap the the bandage tightly around the limb going as far up your leg as possible, try not to move your limb and relax...I know it is easier said then done. Try to identify the snake and seek medical help straight away.

I've seen 2, one in Rice paddies and the other in the mountains near a lake, Cobra and a Viper, to close for comfort but I wasn't in any real danger, scared the hell out of me.
