Q: What is the procedure regarding Z visa/residence permit if I change jobs in same city?

I am keen to come back to China working in a specific field. I have worked in China in this specific field in the past but am having no luck in securing a new job in this specific field since I do not currently reside in China. As a result, I intend to make use of my TEFL qualification and previous experience in teaching English to come to China, get an English teaching job but continue searching for a job in my chosen field.

If I was offered a job in my chosen field are there any pitfalls I should look out for with regards to my Z visa and residence permit? Or will it just be a case of transferring the details and sponsorship to my new employer's name?

First please allow me to clarify a point, then I will answer your question.

Your work visa is only good for 30 days after you enter China.  Within those 30 days, you must finish (if not done) getting your FEC, and your work permit (which allows you to work legally) and your residence permit (which will act as your visa while in China working).  But those are tied to your place of employment.  So, if you change jobs, you must go back to PSB and change both to reflect your new employment name and address.

So, answering your question now, once in China working as an English teacher, if you get a job offer from a company allowed to hire foreigners, you must quit your current job, secure a letter of release, and then visit PSB within 10 days of quitting and transfer your work and residence permits to your new employer to be totally legal.
