Q: What is the strangest thing you have eaten in China?

One time while I was in Inner Mongolia I was sort of forced to eat lamb's head. I just ended up picking at it, not really eating that much. It was hard when its eyes were looking right at me and then my host told me I should eat the eyes!

Just wondering what is the strangest thing you have eaten in China.

I think the two strangest things I have eaten were:

1) Silk worms
2) Sheep penis

I would eat the silk worms again...not as bad as they sound but I would pass on the sheep penis. Although I do like a good Rocky Mountain Oyster!

Holy cow Jason...that's monstrous...

I evaded the penis soup - 3 (or was it 5) different animal penises - and instead tried a funky red looking lizard soup. The lizard was whole and was as big as my hand.

Of course, this was in Guangdong.

When I was in Yunnan five years ago, (Lugu lake) I watched my host throw a chicken against the wall to kill it, cut it up, drain its blood, then make a chickens-blood-omelet with the eyes staring out at us on the grill.

'politeness' meant that I had to eat some of it even though I am a vegetarian...

...it tasted very egg-like.

I try to stay away from strange food but on a few occasions I have eaten something only to find out later it was something strange.

One time I thought I was eating beef only for my Chinese friend to reveal it was actually dog...no wonder it wasn't very good.

Over time, it's been a challenge/game for the Chinese I eat with to try and find something I haven't tried before. So I've done the whole dog, rat, tarantula, eyes, heads, organs, etc. I've gotten good enough that unless the flavor is covered with too much spices, I can normally guess what creature and/or from what part of the body I am eating.

Saying that, the one dish that completely stumped me was during a business dinner at a fancy hotel. It was a plate that looked like white Spaghetti O's with no sauce. They were chewy and had no real flavor one way or another. It turned out to be a plate of chicken butt-holes.

2) Pig eye ball. *shudder*
3) Mantis shrimp. Google it. It's pretty rad.

I am reasonably adventurous in what I eat. So new things that I have eaten in China are.

Mantis shrimp are great and very little different to a normal prawn.
Many different types of muscle/shellfish
Slikworm lavae Actually the fried ones with plenty of Chili are sensational.
Most forms of intestine/liver/kidney/heart of pig,cow/chicken, sheep etc Usually very good.
Blood that is congealed Pork blood I think in hotpots etc SoSo but not really bad
Donkey. Really did not think it was as good as beef, pork or lamb.

I have knocked back. (sorry this is an Australian term for "Said no to")
Dog
Any form of penis
Scorpions
Crickets

In general I love the taste of the food and it's variety. It is one of the main reasons I like to visit China

I'm kind of adventurous when it come to trying new things but there are a few animals that I will not eat (for example: dog and cat). I don't think I'd eat insects either.

As far as the things I have eaten:
turtle (not very good)
bullfrog (not bad)
starfish (tastes like the ocean)

It's fascinating to me the different kinds of "weird" food that you can get in China. Also, how much it varies by province and even city.

I have managed to stay away from everything so far. If ever I am invited to eat and the food is barbaric: the host is losing face, I will disrespect him and 'I will do a runner'.

I've been warned many times not to say no to Chinese people when they offer things because they will be offended. I couldn't care less, though. What are they going to do, hate me without telling me they hate me and being polite?

That is the Chinese way after all.

There's  no adventure in this field.  I always say  "Thank to the Invitation

but,  I can't because of Religion Reason".

And I am lucky they don't insist at me ......

Got a pig's penis stuck in my throat once. There's something I never imagined myself saying 10 years ago, but it's surprising how many times i've said it on this website alone in just the last four months. I was actually eating it by the way..............I wasn't simply pleasuring a live pig.
