i use google translate. Download the apk, download the offline language packs you want and turn off mobile data when in use. Gets the point across.

Are you using an Andriod handset? If so, I can give you a solution that can help you get the results. If you just want a translator that can only translate Chinese texts into major languages and vice versa, without word recognition or snap-translation you can use 'Translator Buddy' available for Andriod, not sure about iOS since I have not tried on the iPad.

I don't have high flying phone, or  wifey.

My 'technically advanced' Nokia (150 Rmb, red colorangel) rings only when I'm eating or taking a shower.

The coolest thing at the Iphone IMO was 'point it toward the song, and you get display of song's title and band', buTT....that was around 2008.

So, I use MDBG for China-man translations over my puter, or I just search for 'online translator', and use the first one comes around for other languages.

I guess, I'm a bit OT in this 'appliances' world.

Waygo generally works with menus though sometimes the translations are a bit rough!

I would suggest updating your hardware - try the new Girlfriend 5.0., or if you can afford it, Mistress 1.0 or 2.0.

Otherwise, you could try Pleco with the paid add-on character recognition. Though, I haven't had a lot of success with the free/trial version ;(

(granted, not a lot of luck with the aforementioned Girlfriend apps either :(  )
